I've started the restoration of the underhood area of my Challenger. It's a 318 car but I've built a new 360 to install. Before I install the motor, I'm cleaning up, replacing parts, and repainting the underhood area. I could use some help to know what should be body color, what should be black, what should be left natural, etc. I'd like it to look as original as possible under the hood. It's an FY4 car so I'm sure the area behind the grille should be blacked out. Where does that begin and end? Also, should the cowl be blacked out as well? I thought I read somewhere that the blacked out cowl was a '70 thing. It's also an A/C car (which will be operational) if that matters...

Any and all help and pictures would be appreciated!

Do a search on posts by Snoopy. He has posted the factory drawings on the blackout spray specification. Remember the paint on the line was applied by a guy in a pit so the spray angle is in that direction. Runs, overspray and inadequate coverage were all par for the course.
My 73 Cuda was blacked out.

Thanks for the info. I did a search on Snoopy's diagram and all I could find was the cowl diagram for a cuda. Can anyone tell me what models had the blacked out cowl? Also, does anyone have any intel on where the radiator support should be blacked out?

Any area that body color can be seen thru the grill should be blacked out.

Take care,
Rick

The cowl should be blacked out,and there was over spray on the firewall if you want to make it look correct.

Was he standing on a ladder in a pit then?

I like the yellow battery rope must be from NOS stock?

Battery was replaced, paint is original on that one.

You missed the key switch for the car alarm.

This was hit and miss. Niether of my Challengers have it. I really don't know how common that is, but it's not a rare occurrence. I struggled with whether to add it to my pink car since most people expect it. I decided to not do it.
