Any of you guys have some good pics of what the underneath of the floorboards should look like when sprayed correctly with body colour overspray? I have a 66 satellite in a bodyshop on a rottisserie and i need to send the body guy some good pics illustrating how i want the underneath to look (i want it to look correct).
thanks !!

If you want it correct you don't do it on a rotisserie first off , the body was painted by a HUMAN , no 2 cars are exactly alike. The only way your car will be CORRECT would be to have it done as it was originally. The oversparay is from the person painting the car bending down to shoot the rockers, the time of the day , and the day of the week will determine how well it was done ...

good luck ...

Amen JohnRR, the floors were never completely painted the best way to answer this is you open the doors when painting and trim out the door jambs, and whatever overspray lands on the floor that was it. Also remember they were using Lacquer and enamel at the time so more made it to the floor than the BC/CC used today. I worked in an automotive manufacturing facility for 13.5 years in the paint department and have a better knowledge of how vehicles are painted. On top of that, at that time my supervisor was a former painter at the Hamtramack plant from 64-75 and I picked his brain regularly.hope this helps answer your question.

Here is an original Daytona.

Mopars were first dipped (that gray color) in a vat with water based dip primer...the sides were washed off but the bottom remains.
Whatever paint got on the bottom got there by overspray only - No one would wrench their backs trying to paint underneath.
Hope this helps.

Well said! As a former Chrysler Final Finish Sprayer I can tell you that there were many variables to doing this job. First off you have to consider that these cars were painted by human beings. Now the cars definitely got the dip primer treatment and then through a bake oven to dry the bodies out. next came the sanding and seam seal lines where any imperfections would be removed on all upper surfaces. Ours was a fairly clean facility and sometimes you worked your tail off sanding drips and crap. As the body moved through this line they progressively got cleaner, particular colors would receive different color base primers applied to help the final color hide in fewer top coats! Usually door jambs, hinges etc. got the extra treatment. Next they got sanded and tacked off ready for final. There were two guys ready to install the hood prop rods and then to proceed to spray the engine bay, door jambs, rear trunk openings then the last guy would pull the prop rods and throw them into a vat of thinner to rinse off the fresh paint and keep the line moving. With the hood dropped and doors closed the car moved into the first station which contained what we called the "bells". These were specially mounted spray gun canisters that were mounted on a track and they would move from side to side misting on the final color coat. After the bells were two more spray guys to even out the metallic top coats and catch any light door jambs or door edges. I can tell you from experience that since the cars sat on a rolling cart that started over in the body shop as a body in white on through paint and into final assembly. The cars were not that far off the ground and most of the guys I sprayed with weren't going to bend down and spend a lot of time worrying about the underside of the car. Sort of like do as little as humanly possible. Me on the other hand, since I was getting paid to use up as much paint as possible and yes I coated everything on my side, just short of putting in some free saggers of course! The moral of this tale is the fact that most of these ultra perfect paint jobs that are showing up on more and more restored cars while they do look very nice they are way far off of what a factory painted automobile would have looked like in the late 1960's. The over spray thing is getting closer but still not hitting the mark IMO. JC.

Very Nice! How about things like painted wheels? Were they in the car?
What plant and what era did you paint in.
Thanks!

I have several painted steel wheels
that contain every color of the rainbow globbed around the center opening. I believe the weels were set on some sort of jig that supported the wheel by the center and they were then sprayed body color.
Appears the next wheel was placed on the jig w/o cleaning the previous colors, which then transferred prior paint to the center opening of subsequent wheels.
This is on a st louis 68.
