Thanks guys.....Great link. It looks like the aircleaner is the same for 383 and 440 for 1971. The one I'm looking at is painted orange and is supposed to be original. It looks to be a 1970 unit. I saw your listing for the 1973 340 aircleaner. I have an original one stored away that I've owned for close to 30 years, no flap. It came off an original 1973 340 Dart Sport.

Yes, there is only one dual snorkel air cleaner for cars in 1971. Only 383 and 440 engines used it.
Beware that the 1972 orange air cleaner looks very similar to the '70 one. See this picture from my site.

Was just gonna post that, Nick. You beat me to it
By the way, I know a lot of people link to that page for air cleaners. I recently added shortcuts to each type of air cleaner to make it easier. If you look right below the pictures of each type, there is a small blue line. If you right click on that and select "Copy shortcut", then you can paste the link to that air cleaner. The page just go so long that it's a lot of scrolling.

There are 2 versions of the '71 style air cleaner: early w/the passenger side snorkel like a '70 (NO-hump) late w/the passenger side snorkel like a '72 (HUMP)
I have no idea what time frame 1971 model year Hamtramck (N1B) 383-4bbl e-bodies switched from early-to-late style.
** about 5500 total cars (- N96 383 4-bbl w/SHAKERs) at Hamtramck used that air cleaner

Yes you are correct. They do all have the breather hose coming from the left snorkel. I don't think anyone can deterimine which snorkel design you should have on any particular car. There was probably a mix of both on the assembly line at the same time.
