I should probably know this, but I don't.

Is special machining required to use a roller cam and lifters in a production 440 block?

Are there any concerns that I need to know about?

No special machining other than making sure you have enough valve spring retainer to valve guide clearance for the lift you have .

But you'll need a cam button , bronze gear oil pump drive , shorter pushrods and an adjustable rocker arm.

Thank you for the response.

I'm buying completely new heads, so all head/pushrod considerations will be taken care of there as they want to know cam specs to buy the heads.

Do the bronze gears last very long? I've read some that say they do and some that say they don't. I've also read that there are different alloys of bronze gears. Who makes a good one for a 440 then?

The bronze gear wears, something has to be soft because of the material the cam core is made of and the gear is the sacrificial part, I have no idea who makes the best .

Does anyone make 440 roller cams with the cast iron gears pressed on?

Not that I have heard of , if it was a chevy or a ford yes , mopar is the red headed step child of the aftermarket .

Problem with the BB Mopar is the oil/distributor drive gear is at the front. In small and big block Chevys as well as SB Mopars with the drive gear at the back, it is a relatively simple matter to press on a gear because it can be made to fit over the rear journal. With the larger journals at the front of camshafts the inside diameter required for the drive gear would be larger than the gear itself.

I've found that Milodon's works pretty good and last for a few years. Make sure you keep the cam end play to a minimum (no more that .005"). Try not to run excessive oil pressure.
