Anyone else notice this new rule? SECTION 4 – NHRA SUMMIT RACING SERIES SECTION 4A – SUPER PRO, PRO, SPORTSMAN Page 4.4 FRAME: 4 ROLL CAGE PADDING Beginning June 1, 2011, roll-cage padding meeting SFI Spec 45.1 mandatory on any vehicle running 9.99 (*6.39) and quicker. Padding must be used anywhere driver’s helmet may come in contact with roll cage components. See General Regulations 4:11, 10:6. Hopefully it won't take too many $25+ sticks of padding.

Why should they give reasons? It all boils down to "if you wanna race, do as I say". Not much different than the Government telling you what to do......you'll rarely see any logic behind those decisions. Someone "important" got a bo-bo on his head.....he whined ,so here it is. Another reason (although it's probably the least expensive reason) to stick to 10.0's.

one word Insurance Someone determined the "standard" foam compressed too much at higher impact speeds. Resulting in a hit nearly the same as a non-padded bar. I love the way some folk think/assume the new rules are to make racers pay more, or to make more money for NHRA. Most of the rules I have seen have been "safety" oriented, which means they are implemented to help reduce law suits and insurance costs to help keep race tracks open. Kinda hard to race when insurance is too expensive to keep up, or some litigation costs a track more than it grossed in the last 10 years. I can see that $50 of foam padding is going to keep me from racing, particularly if could keeps more tracks open by helping to control insurance costs. Should I get some cheese to got with the whine? wow - another new SFI rule . How surprising !! Steve- one of the Eddyville techs said I needed the padding a couple years back . I just bought a 3 or 4 ft foam piece from Summit (or jegs? ) . Its really cheap (and orange ) about $5 EDIT - so it has to be a SFI stamped piece of foam ? un-freakin believable kinda like the locking trans dipsticks

The cheap padding looks, well cheap... So you have to buy a stick of roll bar padding that doesn't expire... Big deal. Rules from NHRA are usually there for a reason. Cars running those speeds can and do crash. If it happens to you, you would want to know your safe right?
If you don't like it, get out the wax, and start enjoying car shows.

Totally disagree.
no disrespect jerico---but the comment " you would want to know your safe right? " sounds like an insurance salesman pitch.
This is drag racing.
my opinion -
Our "sfi" Snell helmets smacking the foam (very , very , very rare) .... no way a 2 inch foam vs a " sfi" 2 inch foam is going to matter.
Its simply SFI ,NHRA , and the manufacturers making money off the racer. Its not needed. just like the locking trans dip stick , and on and on .....
What happened to the old days? you are a drag racer -- strap in and floor it. Wrecks happen.
Next up for 2011 , SFI Maxi Pads.
gimmie a F.. break .

what makes me wonder here, is...what's wrong with the padding INSIDE the helmets, that you must have padding OUTSIDE the helmets? I totally understand the need for safety. People can and do die on the track, and there's no reason to cut corners on safety. but, some of these rules makes me glad that I'll never have anything that fast!

I'm glad there are still people out there that $50 is pocket change to. Padding on the bars, not a problem. SFI sticker on it, $$$ in someones pocket.
Here is an email that I got from a track owner that has drag strips in three states. It might change your mind.
"The state mandates insurance regulations, not nhra or ihra and they do not vary much from one track to another.....nhra requires all sfi regulations, some of which i dont agree with...different states do require different insurance policies...premiums almost double if you are an ihra or nhra track.. thanks"

Well I am almost certainly going to put my car back on the street. My concern is that the thing that will SAVE me if someone t-bones me (the rollcage) is the same thing that will KILL me when I whack my un-helmeted head on it. Anyone know what padding will do the most good if you are NOT wearing a helmet?

I say you all just run mid 10's. You dont need the SFI padding then. If this is going to make or break a racing budget then perhaps a fiscal re-evaluation is in order BTW you can buy it for less than $25 a stick, just look around a bit. Ok flame away

DO they give any REASONS for this ? ... is this so much better than the "regular stuff" ?
Just a guess, but helmets that meet the spec, but just don't provide the protection required in real world accidents I would suspect....And hopefully its not a money thing and we have to have sfi approved padding or some other BS.
Meaning over time, they have reviewed the injuries and found the helmets they require aren't working when impacting a steel tube at the velocities we are running.
Pretty much they are ruining any chances of us with a 9s street car from really wanting to run 9s...But does this mean we no longer need helmets if the bars are padded, or are the helmet specs junk? I would also like to see the data driving the changes along with the harness expiration data.
