Now that I have the 518/46RH in my 1978 club cab I need to convert it over from the electronic speedo drive to cable operated...what do I need?

Assuming you are not using the Factory ECM to control the Transmission you don't need anything.

The factory electronic speed sensors fit in the same hole the older speedometer drive gear adapters fit in. It's a drop in swap.

If you need to use both a Cable and a Speed sensor I am working on an adapter. I just haven't tested it yet. I'll let you know if you like.

So...I just take out the electronic connectors and the cable should screw in? Or do i need a fitting and a drive gear? I started this project with no motor and trans so I've got no reference.

You need the gear and housing from an older trans. You'll need a gear that matches you rear gears and tire height.

Like said above it will just drop in.

The 518 probably has the same speedo pinion adapter as the 3-speeds, the distance sensor just screws on to the same thread that the cable used to.

My 92 D250 Cummins has the speed sensor with a wire and a cable attachment. The speedo is still driven the old fashioned way but the computer wants to see the speed too.

So my next question is... w/3.23 gears and 27 or 28" tires which speedo drive gear do I need?

From the tech archives link at the top of the page. It's a great source of info if you use it. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/auto/12.html

Just an FYI. They used a 2 wire inline one like you are talking about for several years but the newer ones use a 3 wire one that does not have a cable pass through. If you are doing a ~92 or later trans and using the ECU to control the trans and need a cable then you need another adapter.

If you are using hydraulic & vaccume controllers to work the Lockup & overdrive like most people do then you don't need the speed sensor.

Yup. And here's an easy way to seem like you know it all: For "average" tire size, just drop the last digit from the axle ratio -- that's the number of pinion teeth you need!

Yeah, no ECU on this one, just the pressure switches and a vacuum switch!!
