no, i guess you can call it a stupid question, i do not understand the concept on the sending unit, my 68 coronet is having a fuel issue, and i have ruled out the fuel pump and fuel pump rod, i was told to replace the sending unit, fuel line from the tank and the tank to make sure this does not happen anymore, i thought the sending unit only purose is to show how much gas is in the tank?

The sending unit has the tube and sock on it that the fuel is sucked through. It the outlet from the tank. What kind of fuel problem are you having? Have you checked all the lines for cracks and to make sure the rubber line is good?

The sending unit has a screen sock on the end at the bottom of the tank that can get gummed up, especially if the car has sat for a while. The pickup line, too, can become gunked up. Mine was in really bad shape when I got my car. It's an easy fix... also check to see that there are no major kinks or crimps in the metal lines.

so you think i should just get a sending unit to see if this work? the gas tank is not rusted out, i will take off the sending unit and check out the internal, i can clean it out and put new sending unit and this should be it?

Before you spend any $$ replacing anything, Diagnose it. Check the 2 sections of rubber fuel hose, 1 by the tank , and the other by the pump.
Is the metal ground clamp over the rubber section by the tank? The sending unit is just a variable rheostat that should read about 15 ohms full and 85 empty, and the previously mentioned pickup tube and sock.

Take care,
Rick

Should be... you will be able to see the screen when you pull the sending unit. i just read through your other post. Pull your fuel pump and measure the rod like they were saying. It shouldn't have any mushrooming on it.

Back to the sending unit... pull it and look and see if it's gummed up. You can order new socks separately if that's all it is. It's also a good time to check your float, and you can order those separately also. Try for a metal one over a plastic.... but yours is probably good. Just check the pickup tube for gunk and inspect the lines near the sending unit on the car for kinks.

If you have a compressor, blow the hard line out from the front of the car to the back when the sending unit is out...

Your half-full filter looked normal, they usually run like that. If the car is losing fuel pressure, and the sending unit checks out... it's probably that mushroomed rod. or there might be a small inlet filter on the carb in the feed line? Some carbs have them, not sure about yours.

Just because the tank is not rusted does not mean the sending unit is not.I just pulled a unit out of a tank that my friend swore the gas gauge worked but would not get gas through the line. The bottom half of the float was gone and the line was plugged solid with rust but the outside of the tank looked great.

the sending unit looks fine, the inside of the tank is spotless, the sending you is the orginal and has the bass float, all the lines look good, i guess the only other thing is to take out the rod and look there and blow out the hard line from the tank to fuel pump
thanks

You tried blowing through the sender pickup to make sure you have no obstructions? Also, why did you delete your original post?

One of the last things you want is an after market sender. Read the many posts on how poorly they work for the guage.Problem is most likely somewhere other then the tank pick up.
