What do you guys think of these filters ?

First one is a Summit, 40micron, inline style. Flow is stated as 130 gph, length is 4 inch filter

Second is a Mallory 140 series. 40 micron, Flow is 200 gph. Canister style filter

I recently installed a Mallory 250 fuel pump, ,, ( and the above summit brand, inline, filter. )

Fuel pressure is drifting down,,,,after launch to 3-4 lbs,,,,and when driving around in the pits.....

Do you guys think this little, inline filter flows 130 gph ?

I pulled it off the car,,,and put the Mallor 140 series filter on the car. ( i had it sitting on the shelf ), so it didnt cost anything.

I also upgraded my fuel cell vent size from -6 to -8 ( same as my fuel line size),,,just for good measure....

Still need to "flow" the fuel system,,and make sure no other issues...

Is the Mallory 140 filter "big" enough for the Mallory 250 pump ?

I wonder if the smaller, summit, inline filter was choking the motor / fuel delivery down the track... ??

(they do make a "bigger" mallory filter) Would that be over kill ?

Is the inline filter a pre filter and the others an after filter from the pump? This sis something I'm looking at to install in mine. Maybe 2 inline filters from the cell outlets to the pump and then a canister filter after the pump. If that is what you are doing, I would think you need 2 inline before the pump for flow. Just my thoughts.

It doesn't look like the summit filter has too much space before restricting fuel flow from trash, also it wont collect water like the Mallory

40 micron is too small for in front of the pump. 100 is more like it.

I know alot guys will come on here and tell me I'm wrong, am I? Nope

are you running a bypass with that pump? did you replace your gauge? either filter is sufficient for what you are doing - other possibility is you may have a bad line - do the flow test! to me it seems like its your gauge acting up or the regulator

Doug the 140 MIGHT be big enough but the 500 WILL
be... this is from the details on the Summit site

These Mallory 500 Series fuel filters are designed for use with the Mallory Comp Pump 250 and 500 series fuel pumps. They may also be used with Mallory Comp Pump 110 and 140 Series fuel pumps. The 500 Series filters are perfect for those engines that require a maximum-flow, minimum-restriction filter. An integral mounting bracket makes installation fast and easy.

the 500 wont have any restrictions for sure... but
try the flow test first to see what you have

Dave,
The pump has a bypass, i have a -8 running from the bypass on the pump to the fuel cell.
I tried 2 different gauges on the cowl, and under the hood,,,both read the same when the car "acts" up,,and drops fuel pressure.., and 2 different regulators, no difference that i can tell.
I need to do the flow test ( have to get some more race fuel in the car )
I wondered about a line issue.

The filter is plumbed BEFORE the pump

I recall you mentioning the inline filter at Norwalk,,,Is Russ running 2 of them ?

Thanks Mike,,,,i had the 140 filter available,,so i thru it back on the car,,,
I noted that when i tryed to blow some air thru the inline filter,,,it was "clogged" a bit,,,and then opened up some,,,seemed a bit restrictive...

I run a mallory 250 pump.
This pump is very powerful and will cavitate if the suction side is at all restricted.
I run an an-12 pickup line from the fuel cell to an aeromotive 100 micron straight filter.
Unfortunatly the mallory 250 only has an-8 size suction and discharge .
I used and adapter an-8 to an-10 for the aeromotive filter and and adapter after that from an-10 to an-12 to the pickup line.

I would also recomend using a return regulator near the front of the vechile, and not use the built in return regulator.

I tried a System 1 30 micron 8 an filter before the pump when I re-did my fuel system this spring. The fuel pressure would drop to 0 going down my drive way, I removed it and everything is fine. Now I have a $90 piece of tool box art.

I think Challenger 1 is right on this one, 100 micron before the pump.

When I put in the Aeromotive setup they advised me of also putting the 100 Micron before the pump and then I have a 30 micron system1 at the carb.

I ran the Mallory 500 series before my billet holley pump and the pressure never dropped. I sold that whole system to a member on here and apparently solved his pressure drop issues. W/my new Aeromotive hot-rod pump, I run an Earls 85 micron in line pre-filter and my pressure actually goes UP a bit at idle when I nail the gas and never drops even at 7500 rpm`s.

I am running the mallory 140 filter before there 140 pump and have had 0 problems so far idle pressure is 8-9 lbs and never seen it lower than 7.5 at end of run this is a return style system.

I replaced my BG 500 filter(10 micron ) between the the tank and the pump with a Aeromotive 100 micron in line and my fuel suply issues went away

I run a 40 micron filter like the in-line summit ( only it's a Russell ) and pump through it with a 150gph Holley pump. At 12 volts, I free flow exactly 1 gallon in 30 seconds. Enough for an 11 second car. I also check it often due to the small surface area of the screen. I'd be stepping up to something bigger if I were running faster though. A flow test will tell you what you wanna know for sure.

Doug I use the brass screen style filter prior to
the pump... I call them tree collectors

I think I am going to order a Aeromotive 12304 filter (100 micron) and be done with it.

I was reading the Aeromotive website,,,very helpful,,,,they stress NOT using a filter element "finer" than 100 micron on the inlet side of the pump, and to have a large surface area type filter.

Thanks for all the info,,,,I will keep you posted on the results,,,

Doug

I run the large 40-micron version shown here before (pre-filter) a Mallory 140 pump: http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/filters.html

I ran a 10an 100 micron after the pump, but I filter all my fuel coming out of the fuel jug....never any problems

Same here....this is what Rob recommended to me when using a gerator style pump. I have a Mallory 250.

Doug, the bypass may be dumping too much fuel. Check the pressure at the regulator inlet and do a flow test. I'm gonna check mine just to be sure
