I run a Comp in my smallblock and have not had any issues, just follow the proper break in procedures.

I ran a Comp 525 hyd for years. Only issue I had was when I tried to skimp on lifters.

Get the better lifters and you should be just fine.

The "proper" break in procedures?
Yeah, try that and you may STILL end up with a flat cam. I wiped two Comp cams in the Charger and a MP stick in the Duster. I did the previously recomended procedure, plenty of lube on the cam and lifters, quick start up and a 2500 high idle for 30 minutes. Now I do the same PLUS add in a bottle of Comps break in lube AND use Valvoline VR1 20w50 oil. The next time I have any cam problems, I'll step up to a roller. Its a huge jump in price, but it will solve the problem and provide more power.

Rocky unfortunately what you purchased 10 Years ago has little bearing on today's WORLD economy and what is rolling out the door of comp these days.

I am doing a 440 for a friend and we used a comp XE268 , off the shelf grind which are NOT ground by comp , they are done by their core supplier and god only knows where. It lasted 7mins of break in in time before it started clacking loudly, shut it down and look over the cam and we can see one lobe that looks weird and you could tell by the bottom of the lifter that it was not rotating well, the lifter moves in the bore fine.

After a few calls I end up getting the cam I should have gotten which was a Comp custom thru Dwayne Porter/fast68plymouth, He specified extra taper, not sure if we got it, and had it NITRIDED which added 150 bucks to the price tag and an extra week to get the cam, bought a set of Crower camsaver lifters and a set of adjustable pushrods from Smith Bros. so we can set the preload exact.

Ran the engine on Friday and it appears to have lasted at least the 40mins of break in. I'm going to pull the intake to inspect everything and reset lifter preload. But man is this cam LOUD for a hyd. flat tappet, we suspect it's the less that optimal clearance in the lifters, but that's a whole 'nother subject for another thread.

You want to hear from people that have bought Comp cams within the last year or two, not 10 yr old parts .

I know mine is at least 10 years old but I had good luck with it and the Comp solids.Probally the best cams for $$$$ spent are the Summit ones Ive bought.Last one was 2 years ago for the kids SB in his truck.I have/had a BB Sumit cam that we pulled from my 440 and put in a 383.That cam lifter set is at least 30 years old and still running.Yeah I know 30 years ago there was some quality but the last few I bought are still going strong. My kid has a Hughes cam in the 413 but its at least 10 years old also.I also have some old solid cams in the garage that are probally 25 years old.Guess Ill save them for a rainy day.Rocky

I have also heard that the quality of the Comp cams has really taken a dive..? I have no personal experience with the newer ones though. I have a Comp XE274 in my Duster that is a great cam, but it is 8 years old. We put a Lunati Voodoo in our Dart last year and really like it.

i built my 440 last summer with a comp xe268 cam and lifter kit. used VR1 10-30 with comp break-in additive and comp assembly lube. so far, no problems. sure, i only have about 350 miles or so on the car, but it's been beat to hell in those 350 miles and it still runs just as well as when first together.

I'm running the same cam in my 360 without any issues. I bought it three years ago from Mancini and used a set of Comp Cam lifters, with the factory springs that come on Edelbrock heads.

Has anyone had any issues w/ comp cams? Customer service is little questionable. The two times I called them it seems they were ready excerpts from their book of excuses.

I've dealt with Lunati and they seem more willing to sort things out.

I was told that a couple of the owners of Comp bought Lunati from Holley .

I've installed two last year. Got a 3rd sitting waiting for my truck's 360. All XE off the shelf grinds. No problems with them following proper procedures.
John,
you of all people know you can still do everything perfectly and still have a cam go south. Unless you have the bores bushed to correct any cam to lifter angle isues, you never know. I know I don't spend the cash for that on most builds. Comp's quality is comparable with most of the better cam companies. that's not to say they are all perfect, but I have yet to lose one.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

yes I know but i am very gun shy after what just happened with this one and even though a lot was spent to make sure it doesn't happen again I still have to open it up and look at it real closely.

there have been a number of postings about cams from comp that went bad in the recent past, it's either something to do with the cam/lifters or the ramps going away from chevy ramps and more toward something that uses the .904 lifter size is exploiting the pisspoor chrsyler machining tolerances ?

Never mind how loud it sounds now.

Maybe the better half bought them?

I installed a comp XE256 cam in my ford FE engine after it wiped out another cam (used cam in an older FE I had around), no issues.

As stated, the reduced Zinc and Phosphorous in modern oils practically require a break in lube addition and/or the use of oil like Valvoline VR1 racing oil that still has high levels of these in there (1200/1300 iirc, respectively). Put in VR1 20W50 oil and STP oil treatment (stated on label with ZDDP, blue bottle) when I broke in the cam, still running strong! Hope that helps and good luck!
