I've recently been asked to have some carb tags made for 71 Thermoquad carburetors (specifically 4972s and 4973s) which were only used on 1971 340 engines ( on all 340 equipped A,B, & E body cars). I have seen dozens of these carbs in various conditions, swap meets, ebay, customers sent in for restoration, on survivor cars, etc. but have NEVER seen one wearing an original carb tag. I have seen them on Competition Series and other TQ's used for other later applications, just never on a 71-73 OEM MOPAR TQ. Recently 4 early road test magazines surface from 1970/71 that show 4 different cars, 2 had visible tags, 2 did not, so at least some cars had them. What I suspect is that the cars that had them were early built pre-production or Pilot cars and had pre production carbs with later built regular production cars lacking the tags. What I am seeking is further information on the subject, any additional info or evidence etc. would be highly appreciated.

I have 2 71 cuda 340 cars, the original carb on the april 71 car has no tag at all. The september 70 build car does not either (carb was rebuilt but no reason not to keep the tag). I bet you wont find any unless the very early early cars like you said. I have been following 71 340s for a while for obvious reasons, I never seen tags. -bob

I had a 72 340 carb I sold to a guy in canada last summer that had a tag, didn't know it was un-usual or I may have at least kept a pic.
I don't think I have any more 340 carbs in my stash but I will look just to be sure.

Quote:
the only odditiy i had notices was 2 forms of dating on the 4972 +4973 carbs
some used the older letter=month/year ie: JO as compared to the typical t-quad dating , day of year, then year ie: 123 3
Hi Tony,
Yes I've also noticed the change in date coding the 71's. A few months ago I started recording the dates on new arrivals to see if I can learn more. I am keeping data on 72's as well and will probably expand to other years as I go. Some numbers appear to be duplicates but they were stamped with different spacing so I included them as unique.
1971's
4972S G0 July 1970
4972S J0 September 1970
4972S G0 July 1970

4973S D 310 0 11/6/70
4973S F 351 0 12/17/70
4872S G 011 1 1/11/71

4973S G 033 1 2/2/71
4973S G 0331 2/2/71
4973S G 0341 2/3/71
