Im pulling the motor on my RR next month. Nothing else is going to be done, no paintwork or otherwise, its all perfect. Is it easier to put on my 2 post lift and take out the bottom with the tranny or remove the hood and go conventional? Its a 426 hooked to a 727, fyi. Thanks

I took my 440 and trans out the top. The hood needs to come off. I had the car up on jack stands and had to choke up tight on the cherry picker but it worked. Don't forget to drain the trans. I tried one of those plastic plugs to hold the fluid in. The lip of the plug got caught on the pad of the roller jack under the tail shaft and popped out. It left a mess. You will need to be able to angle the engine pretty good too. A piece of cardboard against the firewall and over the core support can save the paint. The extra width of the 426 may make it harder to come out the top, especially around the master cylinder. With that said, if I had a two post lift, I would probably have dropped my k-frame. Its a lot less of a pain undoing some of the suspension stuff having a lift, and would be a nice clean way of pulling it. If you seperate the lower control arms from the spindles, you can leave the brakes alone too. Mark the tie rods in case you spin them so you don't need to re-align.

MY biggest question is: Will the car become off balance on the lift without the whole frontend, k-frame, motor and tranny in it? I dont want it to pop a wheelie as I lift it up because its soo tail heavy. Thoughts????

Doubtful. If the rear lift pads are on the leaf spring bracket mounts, you'd still need a lot of weight in the trunk for a wheelie. I put my engine in this year from the bottom using jack stands to support the car. Rears were on the leaf spring hanger mount bulkheads. Had to put about 500-700 pounds in the trunk to balance the car on the rear jack stands so I could do it as a one-man show. That was with both bumpers on, radiator in, interior in (no column), and front spindles on (with brakes and UCAs on the car). LCAs stayed with K-frame. T-bars were in, but slid back to clear. Sorry, no pics.
If I was doing it again, definitely out the bottom. Takes longer, but easier to do, especially if you're working by yourself.
One other thing, I had a spare jackstand sitting under the one of the springs behind the diff housing to keep the car from rocking back too far. With a two-post lift, this of course wouldn't be necessary.

Having done them both ways, I now will always go from the bottom. A lot less chance of scratching the firewall, rad cradle, inner fenders, a lot less mess. I made a 4 wheel cradle that the K frame sits on, and at the back, the trans mount sits on. Undo everything, lift the car up, and voila, there it is!
