My '67 Fury has a problem when I put it into park. Sometimes it does not go in and the car will roll forward or backwards which ever way it is facing. Other times it will engage right away. I have adjusted the linkage as it says in my service manual and I thought I did it correctly. All other positions are fine. Could it be something else or should I mess with the linkage some more? Thank you for any help with this.
John

In worse case the spring on the rod may have broke. That would require to you to pull pan and valve body. I would put the rear in the air and work the linkage to see if there is any flexing or hanging it up first. If you pull the rod out it should be 8 3/16" from big end to center of pivot at E-clip.

check your linkage bushings. they get worn and "waller" out. this causes too much "play" and does not cause the shift lever to engage each position correctly.

especially in "park". the reason being is that when engaging "park", most people slam it into that position. This equates to a higher stress on the bushings (which are plastic) and will cause them to wear more significantly on the side in which stress is applied. after time, the bushing becomes oval shaped and sporadically does not allow "park" to be fully engaged.

x 2 ... and I have even seen in-the-past these bushings being almost completely GONE ....

I had a recent case(90 stick-shift Caravan) ...where the bushing WAS totally gone. It would not go into first-gear at all. I made a replacement-piece to go in there ....a wood dowel with modified fender washers on each side !
