Hey guys, I have a friend with a 69 GTX 440. This summer he had problems with what we thought was vapor lock. So we put a Hemi fuel pump on it today. It would not pump any gas. So after looking at it. It seems that the push rod is barely pushing it. So we put the 440 back on and it is doing the same thing. Is it common for the push rods to wear out? If I push the pumps myself I can get suction, but when we put it on the car there is nothing.

Thanks Scott!

Seems I remember some posts about some rods wearing out. That would be better than the cam lobe going round.

Yes. they wear out. It's not absolutely common, but it does happen.

...Have you tried to pull the rod out yet? If it's warn there could be a nasty bur on the top end making it hard to get out. I think some have said that you can keep working it to the point of shearing the bur and coming out.

happened to me last summer.
replaced fuel pump, fuel tank and sending unit. still had problems
replaced the rod and ALL BETTER

the rod was like worn 1/2" on one end.

I found out it is actually not that umcommen due to rash of poor quality rods

...my understanding was the Hemi rod had a different P/N and had hardened tip's. I know the P/N is, but not sure on the hardened ends. In the 80's the local Dealer was out of, or NS1 on the 440 rod so I had him look up the Hemi & there was a Pkg of 5.

I think a new one is 3&1/4". pull yours & see if it's shot. find out who makes the good (hardened) ones before you make a purchase

Hey Guys, it was the push rod. Took it out today it was 3/8 shorter than the new one. It runs great now!

Thanks again Scott!
