What model years used the direct drive starter on the 426 Hemi with a 4 speed trans? Just trying to get a bellhousing and starter that will work with my 143 tooth 8 bolt flywheel. Not interested in spending a fortune on the correct bellhousing and direct drive starter for my 67 Charger.

I went with a 440 Bell and a ROBBMC starter. Never look back!

The original '66-'69 Hemi 4 speed cars used a 172 tooth flywheel and a direct drive starter with a special bellhousing. We have a gear reduced mini starter to replace the direct drive starter:

However, if you are going to use the 143 tooth flywheel, you will need a bellhousing for a 143 tooth flywheel (RB or '70 and later Hemi) and a starter for a 143 tooth flywheel such as this one:

The engineer that designed, and the bean counter that signed off on the direct drive starter abortion for the Hemi, should have been drawn, quartered, shot, and fed to the hogs.Dave

I have a bellhousing for 70 and later, # 2892513, and it wont fit over the 143 tooth flywheel. Is my only option with this bell to use the 130 tooth flywheel and gear reduction starter? Which bellhousing fits the 143 tooth flywheel and hemi??

143T 11" flywheel/bell cause some fit problems with stock Hemi exhaust. Use the 513 bell and get another flywheel.

Thanks for your help. Apparently some of the 11 inch cast iron bells fit the direct starter and some will fit the gear reduction starter.
I will use the 513 and buy a new flywheel.
Any body need a good used 143 tooth 8 bolt flywheel that has been resurfaced??

The 11 inch housings will fit either starter..
I had originally tried to use the 11 in bell with the stock gear reduction starter..
It all fit well until I put the exhaust manifolds on... then... NO WAY...The starter and the manifold take the same space...

That should work, 10.5 in clutch and flywheel should use the same starter as the automatic..
I actually used that set up back in the 80s on a different car..
By the time I figured out that I had outsmarted myself by going with the 11 in bellhousing, I already had all new clutch and flywheel, so the Rob Mc starter was my best choice...
