I picked up a 69 cast 340 block with a casting number 2780930-340. By the number one cylinder is stamped FW340P30660111. Is the stamped number the VIN? Where else is there to look on a small block for a sequential number?? Can somebody please decode the stamping for me? THANKS MOPARTS!

There are two numbers, the VIN number and the engine serial number. FW340P30660111 is the engine serial number, it decodes like this;
F - Series (model year) 1970
W - Engine assembly plant, Windsor, Ontario
340 - 340 CID
P - Premium fuel reccomended
3066 - Engine final assembly date from the 10,000 day calendar - Dec. 19, 1969 (1970 model year)
0111 - 111th engine assembled at the plant above on the date above.
The VIN number will be on the passenger side of the block slightly above the oil pan rail.

I sure wish people selling 1970 casting dated 340 blocks would add the (bolded) 10,000 date to thier ads, it would sure make my hunt for the block I want easier

Scott, If it is a 1970 Hamtramck or LA car, just register and I will contact you if the block from the car surfaces. (or if I know of it already) Barry

Thanks guys! I'll do a little scraping tomorrow and get the VIN off the side of the pan rail.

The VIN begins with an E and has a six digit number following. Barry I shot you a email with the numbers for you to check.

Scott, My original engines assembly date is five days after my cars SPD, it happened. Either the engine was not available and the car was built late or the engine date has a typo. Joe, It is from a 1970 LA built car, so it has to be from a Duster, Cuda or Challenger. Barry

The owner had passed away and his wife said he was always bringing cars home. There is no telling what kind of car the 340 was out of.
Another quick question....Where would a 340 have been assembled if it were stamped DW340? Detroit?
Thanks again guys!

First digit "D" is the model year designator 1968 2 nd W = Windsor plant
Barry laid it out above in an earlier post.
