My father owned a 67 New Yorker with the VIN code that translated to 'Special Order 8'. The book showed two possible engines - the standard 440 and the Special Order 8. He used to tell us that it meant it had the 'police' engine.

But, in later years it became obvious the engine was a normal 440 in every way - log manifolds, no windage tray, single snorkel air cleaner, etc.

The only thing I could find that was different was it had a Holley rather than a Carter.

So, what does Special Order 8 actually mean?

I ran into something similar about 4 years ago trying to decode a 65 Dodge 880 sedan I bought. It had a certified speedo, a special brass ID tag on the doorjamb (I presume installed by a fleet customer) and had special engine codes on the fendertag.

The car only had a 383 2-barrel, which was standard in the 880, and it appeared to be original (or accurate for the car, at least).

I never found out any further info on that engine code.

The 350hp 440 in 67-68-ish generally had a Holley carb.

I believe the Special Order code for '67 was "K".

K is the code for the standard 440-4 low power.
M would be the special order V8.

Maybe the original poster was looking at a '66 decode where K would indicate a special order V8. By 67, K just means the standard 440.

I don't recall the letter any longer but believe me, we checked it many times and it was Special Order 8.
