I'm helping a buddy swap a 360 into an 82 Dodge pickup. The 360 is freshly overhauled and never fired. Part of the deal included a box of three disassembled thermoquads, which the guy doesn't want to try to figure out how to put back together. The 360 (1989 vintage) has he stock 4-barrel (spreadbore) manifold on it, and he wants to buy either a Holley or Edelbrock carb with vacuum secondaries to put on it. I'm an old Hemi guy, so don't have any idea what's available as a spreadbore thermoquad replacement fo this motor. Any recommendations would be appreciated

I may not appear to be doing much, but on the cellular level I'm really quite busy!

There IS NO good replacement spread-bore carb for a TQ. The TQ is the best spread-bore carb.

A regular square-bore carb should bolt on.... and there are many choices there.

But HECK .. you have three carbs ... use what you have. Get a FSM and do-it yurrr-self.

dodge truck use a q-jet with mopar throttle lever for the stock 4-v truck throttle pressure linkage

holley also has a spred bore carb that for replaceing a thermobog

I have one on the sig pic 440 in my dodge truck

I often use a chebby q-jet and just grind the shaft to remove the chebby lever, then tac weld a mopar lever on and use the stock linkage

a 2-v kickdown linkage cam be made to work if you dodnt have the stock truck 4-v linkage

you can use an spredbore to square bore adaptor to mount an eddiebroke carb on also with ease

I have both a q-jet and thermobog on the shelf along with a couple eddiebrokes

I swap intakes and carbs often, depending on the use and performance

a q-jet is hard to beat for gas milage and performance

so is the thermobog if you have a 'good working" one...which I have never had one and dont car for trying to tune one myself

dont like a holley all that much either, but this 650 spredbore manual 2ndary double pumper work super on the 440 so far

after reading the "how to rebuild q-jets" I strip them all down and find them ez to tune

eddiebrokes are ez to tune as well..set it and forget it

If I was starting up a freshly overhauled engine...i would want a carb that I new was good...

nothing worse then having to crank and crank on a new engine....or gas washing the cylinder walls..

Like mentioned, Holley makes (made?) a 650 and 800 spreadbore, both in vacuum or mechanical secondaries. I have the 800 and it runs beautifully on stock and warmed up 440s. I've had it for over 20 years and loan it out to friends for new engine start-up, and sometimes just for fun because it runs so well.

Send your old TQ to me, I'll make it look and work like new, depending on what you shop for probably cost you less than a new carb as well.
