Anyone here ever deal w/ a machine shop called "The Shop" that's in either Charles City or Hopewell, VA (outside of Richmond)? I believe that's the place that Marshall Campbell (Campbell Enterprises) had do all the prep work (bore / hone / install alum. main caps, etc.) on my 448 block before I bought it from him. Any reason to question the quality or accuracy of their work due to your experiences w/ them?

FWIW, the work was done 8+ years ago and I still haven't put the block into service. However, I see a couple of things that make me question their attention to detail, and this got me wondering more now that I'm actually making plans to build the short block.

I used to deal with them years ago, however have not had any contact for the past 5 or so years.

Employee's come and go so who knows

I ALWAYS everything I can no matter WHO'S Name did the work or what their reputation is.

The block and balance job were ALL re-done on my motor after it didn't meet my criteria Paid twice & built once

Assuming that's supposed to say "have it checked again" , yes, that's the plan. Just trying to solicit any "early warnings" that I should expect problems or not.

Are you're talking specifically about the work The Shop did, or an example of having to re-do another places work?

I picked up a block and crank they did for me from Marshall. Top notch work.

Just an example, sorry should have been more clear on that

Invested in my own dial bore, mics and such. Measured my bores and they were nice & round but found out a couple years later when I had the motor out and decided to stick some rings in it that they never used a deck plate as requested no wonder they were so round. So the only way to check a bore in my opinion is to use a deck plate. One thing got past me but is corrected now.

I believe the guy I used to talk to at "The Shop" was Lewis, don't know if he's still there or not. They were a customer at my previous place of employment FWIW.

Thanks for the clarification.

I recently ran into the identical situation w/ the work done by a different shop. The receipt shows bore & hone w/ deck plates; the current shop that re-honed my cylinders said there was no freakin' way they could have used plates because the only way they were round was w/o them.
