Baierl barrels over record NSS field

MADISON, Ill. – Right there in black-and-white for all to see – first class racing.

Overcoming an event-record field of 84 cars, including 77 which answered the call for the first round of Sunday eliminations, Don Baierl defeated Jim Guy 10.019 to 10.501 to claim the championship of the fifth annual Dave Duell Classic Nostalgia Super Stock Nationals during the Monster Mopar Weekend at Gateway International Raceway on September 12.

The previous record of 75 entries was set last year.

“This is so great to win this event,” said Baierl, who used a .025 to .047 reaction time advantage to edge Guy by an .0041 margin-of-victory (approximately nine inches at the finish line). “That light saved me.”

Running under the SharaDon Performance Group banner from his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota, Baierl wheeled his black NSS/A (10.00 index) 1964 Dodge to consecutive on-the-number passes in rounds four and five, 10.003 and 10.005, respectively, before a 9.986 bye in the semifinal set up his run for the title.

“Those dead-on runs really helped,” said Baierl. “We had to change some things around with tires and weight; we ended up taking one battery out. But the car performed so well.”

Guy, from Hilliard, Ohio, used consistency to take his second runner-up performance of the weekend with his white 1964 Plymouth after he was edged in Saturday’s NSS/B class final.

Surviving a potential breakout at 10.440 in Sunday’s first round, he was wasn’t more than 0.03 away from his 10.50 index the rest of the day.

Geary Bates from Wintersville, Ohio, was the other semifinalist. Also running his 1967 Ford in NSS/A, Bates skillfully picked his way through the field until tripping on a -.056 red light against Guy.

In Saturday’s 14-car special event, The Opel Engineering F/X Shootout, D.W. Hopkins of Tupelo, Mississippi defeated Barry Camp of Monroe, Georgia, 9.487 to 9.728 for the victory.

Driving a B/FX 1964 Ford Thunderbolt, Hopkins used a .001 reaction time to beat Paul Habura’s 1963 Plymouth in a semifinal contest.

Camp advanced after surviving his semifinal matchup against Casey Fauss-Johnson, who went -.002 red in his 1965 Dodge.

Hopkins then overcame a .054 to .006 starting line deficit to prevail over Camp’s C/FX 1966 Chevrolet in the final.

Much of the pit talk, of course, was about the possible closure of the Gateway facility and end of the 26-year MMW event.
Host Doug Duell addressed those concerns at Saturday’s NSS dinner.
“I have heard the same stories and rumors you have, I don’t know any more than that,” he said. “As these business situations usually go, this decision is going to be made by three or four people in a corporate boardroom.
“One thing I do know is that the The Dave Duell Classic is going to continue on. When I know something, then you will know something.”

Meanwhile, the Monster just keeps getting bigger.
Reliable reports indicated increased and/or maintained car counts in many of the racing classes.
Of the event-record 84 entries in NSS, 16 were there for the first time and two were new drivers in existing cars.
A combination of more attendance by existing drivers/cars and more new participants now brings up a reasonable goal of 100 NSS entries for future events, Nostalgia Super Stock National Association officials said.
And one of the best shows in drag racing was produced on Saturday morning as an all-time session record of 82 NSS cars went down the track during the third time trial, which took 43 minutes to complete.

Last year’s eliminator victory by Steve Wilson in a 1965 Chevelle was the first time a non-Chrysler vehicle had won the NSS category at MMW, breaking a 13-year streak according to long-time participants. In addition, Jim Netherland in a 1967 Buick was runner-up.
This year, however, Mopars won six of eight class championships and while not prevailing in The Opel Engineering F/X Shootout, one Plymouth and one Dodge advanced to the semifinals.
And of the 13 ‘off-brand’ entries (nine GM and four Fords) starting Sunday eliminations, all the GM cars were gone after the second round with only Bates’ Ford remaining after round three.

Twenty-something-year-old and newcomer Brian Essary found out he had to keep working after showing up with the wrong carburetor and without a front bumper on his 1965 Dodge.
“We can find a carburetor easy enough but, man, you have to have a bumper on the car,” said Duell.
Long-time NSS racer and St. Louis area parts expert Clay Kossuth hooked Essary up with the needed items and the effort paid off as he won the class competition in NSS/G and went three rounds in Sunday eliminations.

Habura’s 1963 Plymouth ‘Keeping The Faith” is not only one of the quickest F/X cars currently running, setting the low elapsed time of 8.734 and top speed of 152.55 mph for the event, but it is also consistent and could get better.
Asked if F/X cars could get down to 8.50, Habura replied, “We have enough horsepower right now to run in the 8.50’s, it’s a matter of getting the chassis and suspension to use it efficiently.”
And further into the future? “We do a lot of research and development; we always have a project going,” said Habura, who has posted an 8.69. “The motors are telling us they want more fuel. We’re going to give it to them.”
