Can you help me ID this 4 speed?
Im trying foremost to determine what year the tranny is and with a little luck the model it came from originally.

sounds like something that was pieced together , is it a crash box ?

is the tail alum or cast iron ? no STREET car came with an ALUM case , especially one with a dual shifter tailshaft , at least nothing i ever saw , if thats what you are thinking

It's most likely a truck/van overdrive case with 18-spline internals, if it is, in fact, an 18-spline. Get the numbers stamped on the pad of the main case.

Thanks for the quick replies...
I dont have any other stampings marked on the cases other than what I already listed.

As far as the tail shaft goes, yes it is aluminum as well. It could be a crash box but Im not certain.

It could very well be pieced together rather than "dedicated" to one year/model.

Based on what I gave you can you determine anything at all?

much appreciated,
Doug

I have a couple dual mt tails that are aluminum. One of them has been coated with a cast iron powder. Some one was "bending" the rules a long time ago.

A-833 O.D. 4-speeds used in vans did come with dual pattern tail housings as John said, but I've only ever seen them with cast iron housings, not aluminum. FWIW, here's a pic of my '86 A-833:

2801176 (numbers on left main case torwards front)
5 C95664 Z (side plate shifter linkage cover)
3410391 (tail shaft numbers)

Thanks for the replies, as always very educational.

Any thoughts/input on the series of numbers listed above?

thanks again,
Doug

yes they are casting numbers that are basicly USELESS in trying to identify a transmission ...

but since this is an all alum case trans ?????

Here's a pic of the RH side of an aluminum main case:

See the raised pad that is machined smooth and stamped with some characters? Look at the pad on your main case and let us know what is stamped there. For reference, here's a stamped pad up close:

the interesting number is the 2801176 (numbers on left main case torwards front)

whats on the trans you have ? i just threw in my scrap pile an alum OD trans case or i would be able to look at that now instead of later .

that number he put up is a part number for something made in roughly 67 or 68 , thats the confusing part .
