My buddy has a 70 Challenger 440 six pack, automatic tranny.

When he starts the car it runs for a second or two and then shuts off. We figured out that after he starts the car and has the key in the start position and the key returns to the run position if he holds the key little further forward in the direction of the start position the car will continue to run, if he lets go of the key it stahls immediately.

We put a new ignition switch in and it seem to run fine the last two times he drove it and now the problem is back again. Did we get a bad ignition switch or is there something else wrong?

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks, Rob

I'd seperate & clean the bulkhead terminals. I would not think the new sw is bad esp w the exact same symptoms but I would check the brass terminals in the ign sw connector for clean/tight.

Try replacing the ballast resistor.

The ignition shutting down after letting the key go to the run position is a classic symptom of a bad ballast resistor but in this case the resistor would'nt magically fix itself then stop working again...You can try the ballast but I'd still clean all connections on the run circuit...
