I wire wheeled my engine compartment brake lines yesterday and they came out way better than I expected. Went over them with some fine grit sandpaper afterwards and I want to keep them looking like this.

Do I clear coat?

I've heard from others that rust sometimes appears under the clear. Suggestions?

Rust will form under the clear coat,....eventually

I know you don't want to hear it,...but IMHO if you want your lines to look good decades down the road,...invest in new stainless steel lines, do the car right, and do it once

also, any "metal" looking paint on the steel lines, will always look like paint on steel lines,...tacky

Yeah, I really didn't want to paint them either...

Try satin finish clear lacquer. Usually find it in a spray can at Home Depot

Lacquer is even more porous than enamel or epoxy....short term fix,...at best

I still paint cars with lacquer - no way would I recommend it in this situation.

Try Gibbs oil or even PC Glisten (from Por 15) - both products are made to preserve bare metal.

The gibbs would look more "natural"
