I have a 1970 Factory dyno run sheet from a 340-6 barrel downstairs I think. It might be 340-4.

I have heard this or that with reguards to the actual factory numbers for stock engines, and I see what the factory claims each were, but I find it funny in cars for sales adds they are advertised as "actual" hp of the car for sale.

1-no two people will tune an engine the same.
2-no two carburators, or three for that matter, are really the same since 99% of the people out there didn't have them flowed.
3-No two engines are built to the same tolerences, nor are the parts in them.
4-Fuel available these days isn't even close to what it was.
5-And frankly, most people really can't tune an engine as well as they would like you to beleive.

The next time I am interested in a car where the owner claims their engine is X amount of HP, I want proof....Too many BS'ers out there.

The world would be a better place if horsepower never entered the dialect of the hot rodder. Same goes for torque.

The absolute worst is when it's used to size a radiator.

Here are the ratings of factory motors:

340-6 = pretty fast
440-6 = very fast
426 = even a little faster

A fined tuned 440-6 will keep up or beat a stock hemi.

Way too many guys are comfortable saying they're car "will run 12's", or "has 500 hp", when in reality, they have no idea. If you don't have a time slip, or a dyno sheet; I don't even want to hear it.......

I would take that bet if you lived closer....It just so happens I drive my engine builders '70 Charger with a Hemi.....Its so stock its scary, considering the ET it ran last week at TNT.

Running headers?, what did it run? Curious minds want to know, is it that yellow one?

Rick.

I have been in both

Cars were

69 Hemi RR Auto 4.10
69 A12 RR Auto 4.10

Both cars were stock and and had bias ply tires
They pretty much came out about the same but the Hemi just flat out put it on the A12 at just under the 1/8 mile
The hemi just doesent stop where the 440 just bleeds out.....
Just my opinion

I am talking about a stock 440-6 with some carb. adjustments. I read an article years ago where they just did some carb adjustments and got some more hp out of it.

Its not the yellow one that went to TNT last Wednesday and didn't do so well. That was one of his customers cars, and it needs a little more time to work some bugs out. We just finished putting it togather the previous weekend. That car has potential and a bigger engine, but the owner can be kinda hard of hearing somtimes I think.

The one I drive is the red one...and it has surpassed all of our expectaions by a bunch considering what it weighs. Its faster than the 416 small block dart I drove for him last year by at least a 1/2s....Time to pull that hemi and put it in somthing lighter and see what it will really do. Personally, I will take a 340 over most 440's, especially in stock form..But that hemi is a beast in sheeps clothing. And in a heavy car, the hemi has always been king. The top end pull on it is just awesome. I might have to borrow it.

Generally, unless I know a little something about the particular dyno and operator, those numbers don't mean too much either. True apples to apples - mph/weight/DA.

440-6 vs. Hemi in equal states of tune? The Hemi will destroy the 440. Even a stock Hemi just won't stop pulling, the wedge motor will nose over about the time the Hemi really starts pulling.Dave

A finley tuned 440-6 won't beat a finely tuned 426. It will beat a poorly tuned 426 but then let's compare apples-apples.

Off topic big time. I think the OP is asking for dyno sheets on stock build engines. Dulcich did a series in Mopar Action a few years ago with a 340, 383, and a 440. Look them up in there archives and I'm sure they are there. They were all pretty close to the stock rating.

I am at the age where I have been there & done that. back in the day, I worked at the dealership for first hand experience.

Thank you. I have seen those, and were curious if he did a similar one with the three engines in my topic. Thanks again for trying to get this topic back on track.

No, never did those three as pure stock. One comment though, an engine will make what it will make as far as power on the dyno, there is a definate point at which you have the combo pretty much maxed-out, and that's what it puts out with it's parts. You only have the fuel and ignition to play with, and once optimized - that's it. There is no "magic" to the tuning, just the know-how to get it right on. When you reach that point, the only way to gain power on the dyno is to change parts, or cheat.

Don't forget that it's also completely acceptable to dyno your engine with a bag of ice on the intake runners, a 'dyno carb', electric water pump, no fan,'dyno' headers, 'dyno' oil pan, 'dyno' ignition system, and a tall outside air duct sealed to the carb with perhaps a few pounds of positive pressure just to make sure no 'dyno' air gets in the motor.

I remember reading an blurb from a chrysler dyno engineer in one of the mopar mags years ago. Seems to me he worked on the 440-6bbl engines back in the day. From what I can remember they had 3 or 4 engines and one would always run a little stronger + an extra deep pan for windage and no accessories, but the bottom line was yes, 390hp was there.
I also recall they let an engine run for over a minute at 6000 or so rpm but don't quote me. Maybe someone with a better memory than my 49 year old one can put there hands on the magazine article
