After a prolonged hiatus from working on my '69 RR, I am wanting to proceed.

I was just looking at the cowl area. Short of dipping to strip the entire car, what are some of the methods to prep and paint the interior of the cowl beneath the grill slots?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if there is one correct way of doing it or not, but when I did my 68 Charger, we sand blasted the grill and much of the area underneath it.

At the time, I had the finders off and the interior out, so getting the sand out wasn't too difficult. Just used lots of compressed air to remove the sand after the blast.

Did you do anything special for prep and applying the paint? Does just painting the cowl with a spray gun get decent coverage inside through the slots?

I wonder how something like the Spray Max 2k epoxy primer would spray thorough the tipped tubes Eastwood sells with their Interior Frame Coating.

I wonder if I'm just overthinking this...

I just recently saw a friend do something that looked useful.. He has some rust issues & wasn't happy with the access to the cowl area so with the fenders removed he cut access holes on either side so he was able to blast seal & paint the inner cowl... Then he welded the access panels back in place.. And while he did a decent job of it the repair is completely hidden when the fenders are bolted on so it really wouldn't show if your welding were sub standard...

Mine (70 E) had some surface rust but was sound. With fenders and hood off I pressure washed inside thoroughly then scraped and sanded as best I could. I used a rustproofing gun - the kind with a 3' or so flexible tube and a nozzle at the end that shoots in all directions - to apply Eastwood rust encapsulator primer to the inside. It was a bit messy and some dripped out the vents but that was OK. When dry, I painted using the same sprayer with Rustoleum aluminum paint. The part you might see if you looked inside the cowl vent got shot body color with the rest of the body. Protection and appearance turned out fine.

While I had my road runner apart I cleaned the cowl real well and bought a quart of brush on bed liner. The heater and drivers vent had been removed so I reached up through the holes on each side as far as I could with brushes, rags, whatever it took and slathered it everywhere. Used a small mirror in the holes to make sure I covered everything. So far so good...
