Looking at rechroming a rear bumper for my 69 Charger. It is not dented but one of the bumperetts has rust. The cost of a new bumper is the same as rechroming the old, minus the hassel. Anyone have experience with the new AMD bumpers? Whats the quality like?
Thanks CAC

If the cost is truly the same then go with your original bumpers. The reproduction Cuda ones are nice, but the chrome is never perfect I've used three sets. The only reason I chose AMD bumpers is because the cost of re-chroming ones in Ontario Canada is absolutely crazy!

If it's a driver, repro is fine. If you want super duper high end quality, then redo an original set, but finding a good shop to do it can be tough.

From what I've read and been told if you want the best, there's only one shop to consider. Keystone Automotive is the new name. They used to be called Northstar bumpers or something like that. They are in Wisconsin, (920)731-3030.
1970 Plymouth 'Cuda #'s 440-6(block in storage)currently 493" 6 pack, Shaker, 5 speed Passon, 4.10's 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Convertible 408 Magnum EFI with 4 speed automatic overdrive, 3800 stall lock-up converter and 4.30's (closest thing to an automatic 5 speed going)

Northstar is/was in Minn. has been bought by Keystone as far as I've been told.
I'm sending mine here:
Keystone Automotive(Northstar) 5085 Wren Dr. Appleton, WI 54913 (920) 731-3030
On a side note, I just got my OE 1970 e-body chrome racing mirrors and some other parts back from Paul's Chrome. The quality is breathtaking! Jules "the wiperman" Daddo was king enough to have his glass guy cut and bevel some replacement mirror glass for them. I don't have the repops available to compare them to, but they are truely beautifully done.

Carl,...some of the guys are talking about the AMD E body bumpers here,...which had some fitment/chrome issuses, even on the second re-tooling,...but your interested in the CHARGER rear bumper,...I too was faced with the decision of spending $800 for triple plate, I already had about $3K invested in rechroming everything else ....So I chose to go with the AMD Charger rear bumper,...It really is a nice piece, the plateing was done rather well,....better than original/NOS,...although not as nice as triple plate,...but I was more interested in a "factory" appearance,...the bumperettes are included, everything lined up perfectly, and the bumper fit all the contours very well,...I used Stainless Steel bumper bolts, polished out, rather than chromed steel, the bumper has been on the car for about 6 years, seen plenty of miles on Hotrod Power Tours/ driven to cross country show tours, seen plenty of wet wether,...no signs of rust, or chrome fade/peeling Mike

Everyone, thanks for the replys. Before I do anything I need to find a reputable chrome shop in Tucson. There are only 2 and I have heard bad things about one. Shipping the bumper and other parts needing rechroming really dosen't appeal to me but thanks for the reference. Chrome plating has gone up quite abit since the 80s when I last did chrome!
If I'm really impressed with the quality on my mirriors, door handles and 1/4 glass frames, then I'll let them do the bumper, otherwise the AMD bumper sounds like a bargain.
Mike, where did you find stainless steel bumper bolts? Thanks Carl

i'd rechrome the original. i tell my plater to keep all the original detail instead of polishing the crap out of my stuff and robbing it of it's original look. overpolished bling is cool for a street rod or harley but i would think replicating the original appearance of a musclecar item would take precedent over bling.

This question really depends on the plater.... I was doing a buick GS and had to have the bumpers re-chromed since no one makes them, I used cambridge custom chrome and paid $800 for the rear and $1250 to do the front as it was bent... when they came back, I compared them to an AMD repo I had on the shelf and they were no better in appearance... in fact my AMD repo looked a bit nicer... the rechromed one was a slight bit wavy looking and had some low spots... It looked ok but,for the price I paid (no choice) I was not happy with the rechrome... Another customer brought me parts done by the bumper boyz that were still all rusty and crusty under the chrome on the back side of the peice... horrible job !
choose your plater wisely and let them know up front, in writing that you will not accept anything but top quality work...

youre talking about a chrome bumper that might be too shiney? what looks bad about a shiney chrome bumper? Id rather have a too shiney bumper than one that I can see gring marks in through the crappy thin plating. I had the bumper on my bird triple plated in 1986 for a boat load of money and it still looks perfect.

and some people stare lovingly at orange peel because, after all, the factory produced it that way...
