Last time I had a stumper like that. I ran my shop vac, outside the garage. Fed the hose inside and put it in the tailpipe.
Then crawl under the engine and have a listen.
I had visions of fuel being pulled into the carb and was going to back off the rockers but I got laxy, found the leak and called it done.

put a couple drops of ATF down the carb, if theres a header leak that should confirm it. Or hook up a vacuum gauge...if the needle has a consistent drop in PSI thats usually a sticky/misadjusted valve

Have a buddy hold their hand over the exhaust pipe (with a rag or welding gloves). An exhaust leak will get louder.
I love the smell of Deer guts in the morning, it smells like... VICTORY!
