There are reports that aftermarket NSS's are too long, this would affect the BU lights but shouldn't affect the Neutral start.
When it won't start have you tried it in both Park and Neutral? Next time it won't start try holding the switch in Start while jiggling the shifter.

when i installed an after marketnss,it actually got in the way of shift,had to grind a little off the tip,now my back up lights are on even when i put it in drive,i've been trying to find the correct one for some time,but seems nobody makes the correct one,if you find a correct one please pm me,good luck
