The cover of the master cylinder in a 71 B Body, power disk brakes, build date May 71, did it have anything stamped on the cover as to which type of fluids to use ?? Also, what was the correct finish.
I pulled mine today, I have the correct master cylinder cast number, the cover gasket is the right number but I'm not sure the cover is correct.
Thanks for the help

can you provide pictures of that tag.
I'm still trying to find that article someone mentioned in Mopar Action.
Here is picture of the tag on a '71 disc brake core I have, the casting number is 3461187. The top four numbers are the last 4 numbers of the Chrysler part number. If you send out a core to have restored that has the tag, remove the tag before you send it, they are flimsy metal that gets damaged if subjected to sandblasting. PM me with your email address for a .pdf copy of the article, dial up beware, it is fairly large file.

No I'm not 100% sure this is the original piece other than the cap had this rubber still in it. And the underside has no sign of gold dichromate. Just the grey phosphate or primer shows. Strange. How do they apply that gold dichromate anyhow?

Are you talking about his '71 hemi cuda? The '71 hemi disc brake cars used a master cylinder that was a carryover from '70 and therefore was different from '71 master cylinders used on non hemi applications in that it was painted black, and its lid would have had the Use J1703 brake fluid callout.

here's what I've found on 71Bs FWIW:
1. HEMI cars did still have black painted MCs (the black 10K mile HEMI runner is a good example)
2. My NOS disk brake MC has a gray phosphate lid with no writing and a metal tag with the 1176 number, a Mfr #, and PWR stamped on it. Date on the box is 72
3. I've only found one magazine road test from back in the day of a disk brake car that has a photo of the engine compartment showing the MC. It's a black and white photo, but the MC appears to be gray phosphate. Definitely not gold, and not painted black.
4. The FE5 SSP 383 car has what appears to be a gray phosphate lid. I don't recall if it had printing on it.
5. Every other "survivor" car I've seen has a gold lid. But these are not necessarily original owner cars...so who knows what's happened over the last 30+ years.
6. the MA article states that all MCs up through 74 were painted black. I believe that is NOT TRUE.

Actually the article says that "a few NOS examples from the early '70's have been observed with the dark gray phosphate coating". In addition the photograph on page 85 shows an NOS example that is phospate gray coating. Based on the NOS samples I had at the time I wrote the article, I was not certain, but I have since come to the opinion that phospate gray is correct for most of the new master cylinders introduced for the '71 model year. That is not always true though, every manual disc brake master cylinder for '71 up I ever saw was painted black. I continue to study master cylinders and on rare occasion have come up with something that contridicts what I wrote. I pass this info on when I find it. For example I wrote in the article that late '60's drum brake master cylinders were natural cast iron finish. After the article came out I found some master cylinders off of original cars and some early date coded NOS examples that were ecoated black, so I now believe that is correct for that master cylinder. That goes against what some want to believe, but the evidence is strong that the black ecoating is correct. Just to confuse the issue further on the early '70's master cylinders, here are a couple NOS'71 up disc brake master cylinders that are black. The top one is painted black, the lower one is ecoated black prior to machining during manufacture, with a gold plated cap. Both have late '70's date codes. You can see that based on studying NOS samples you find contridictory information!!
