I put a MP elec ignition on my 440 Charger. The instructions say to set initial idle mechanical timing at 5* BTDC and it idles fine when I do. Then it says to set it at 38* BTDC at 2000 RPM. When I go to 2000 RPM, the timing is around 25* BTDC. I adjust it to 38* and it runs much better but when I go back to idle, the timing there is now around 20* BTDC and it idles rough. Is there another adjustment in the distributor so I can get 5* at idle and 38* at 2000 RPM both? Is it s spring issue or what? And yes, I'm setting it with the vacuum hose disconnected and the port on the carb plugged.

I think the newer distributors have adjustable weight stops. Most engines like a lot of inital timing and less centrifugal advance. It sounds in your case you need more centrifugal advance so you can run less initial which means opening up the stops. Make sure the weights move freely. If you open the stops all the way, or if it does not have the stops, you may need to elongate the slots so you can use less initial timing.

Total timing is the best way to set the timing. Most people don't worry much about the initial

yes there is slots in the plate under the rotor. takes a t8 tip i think. the mec is adj. from 0 to 26 degrees. set you idle to around 15. vac. unhooked. some people say as much at idle as it likes with out starter kick back. i have my 360 at 18. then limit you mech. so you have maybe 33 for BBs. every motor is diferent and depends on what octane your running. you just have to see what your motor likes. there is a post in the tech archive that is very helpful too.

You want ~38 total (w vac adv disconnected) if running open chambered heads wo good quench & the initial somewhere from 5 to 15 before depending on your cam(highest vac at idle & no kickback when hot starting would get you very close). so yes adjust the slot length to ch the amt of centrifugal.
