Hey gang..
OK, I have my hemi and I'm installing the dipstick.. Any hints on how to coach it all the way in? I'll get about 3/4's of the way in and just won't go in any further.. It's obviously a reproduction cause I couldn't find an NOS version....

Here's what I'm working with..

Thanks..

No its right ....you gotta knock it in so its tight...wrap a cloth around the tube and put some vice grips on it and gently knock it in .... if its not pressed in it will pop out from vibration and pressure

If you try to hammer it in you will most likely just destroy it. Most of the repop tubes are made wrong and will not fit in this way.

Here is how you should do it.

- Grind the end of the tube(that goes into the block) so that it can be pressed in with light force.
- Fit the tube to the block and run it along the front(#1 manifold tube). Get the clamp that mounts it to the head and mark it's position.
- Tack weld the clamp to the tube.
- Put a dab of high quality RTV on the end that goes into the block, and stab it in. Clamp it to the Head/manifold.

Works every time, the tube cannot work it's way out, and the nice thing about this is that you can remove and re-install the tube later without destroying it.

That's what I sort of did.. I took a 3/8 wrench which has a gap that will fit around the tube, yet catches the lip down at the bottom. I worked the tube in as far as it would go by hand twisting it back and forth.. Then a tabbed the wrench, which was around the end of the tube resting on the lip, lightly.. Prior to that, I placed some sealant around the tube to make sure there was sealant between it and block. The tube has a OEM clamp on the first exhaust manifold bolt along with the heat wrap... If I can't get the tube all the way in, I'll trim the top of the tube the same width as that of the space the tube didn't go into the block orifice. That way my oil indicator stick will read properly... Otherwise, it's not going to be in the pan the proper depth....

Does this make sense?

Again, this is what I'm working with.... That's how far I've gotten it down, about 3/4 of the total length to go in.

you have another potential issue , is it me or are the studs on your engine mount not sticking out the end of the nuts ? they really should be .

I've run into that problem myself. I used emery cloth on the part that fits into the block. RTV is a good idea but use it sparingly. If you use the 3/8 open end wrench to tap it into the block, make sure you are tapping not hammering, you will damage the tube wihout much effort. It takes patience and more than a few tries using emery cloth.

Good eye.. I was just tinkering around with the brackets and such.. Made my own until I get my kit Bill over at A+MHightechauto...

I'll eventually put another coat of color on the complete motor once everything's done...

I just put my dipstick in my 383. I am a young guy 31 years old and had an old timer mopar guy tell me to put in the freezer over night. Worked like a charm. I didn't think it would work but give it a try you might be as suprised as I was.

I ran in to this on my 440.

The end of the reproduction tube was not perfectly round and was getting an indent on the side of the tube from the block. I filed the sides of the tube...a lot! Working the tube to literally make it a tad smaller and more round. Then gently tapped it in from the top. Worked, no leaks.

After I broke the first $50 tube I made a tool to install it.
If you dont have it in yet I will post a pic of it. It works like a charm...

Use a crows foot that fits the tube with an extension and it will tap right down in place.

Well, after breaking the previous one and Bill over at A+M Hightechauto sending me another one, I got her installed yesterday afternoon.... With some grinding of the OD of the insertion part of the tube, I got it installed... Now it's time to further my painting detail work.........

Thanks Bill........... By the way Bill, your parts are making the hemi come together rather nicely

Lol, you guys always do everything the hard way (except that freezer method sounds nice). The proper tool to use is a sturdy phillips head screw driver (one that fits inside the tube naturally). Drop the screwdriver into the tube so the screwdrivers handle co0mes to land on the rim of the tube, and tap tap tap away with a dead blow hammer. the tube goes right in, and nothing is damaged whatsoever, since the screwdrive is softer than the tube no matter what.

That would be great if it was a straight shot and the force direction was towards the hole in the block..... The hemi tube has too much of a curve..
