I have a 1987 318 with the 302 cast heads with the bolt down rocker shaft, smog on the exhuats.my heads are cracked, can I replace them with a none smog type head or maybe a 360 head?

yes,any non smog 318 head will work..just no smog pumps unless you get a set of mid 80s 360 heads drilled for the air injection

if they are non emiss heads just un hook the air pump

360 heads work and do give some performance gain on the top end by letting it breath more

BUT>>it lowers the comp ratio

the #302 closed chamber head is a 9.0 to 1 ratio

and the 360 head could drop it below the 8.5 ratio or more

I have used a lot of 360 heads and 4-v on 2-v camed 318s and they get a little bump in performance for what it is..

the #302 heads are plenty and ez to find in most JYs

for a daily driver 360 heads would be fine IMHO,even work good with low octain gas and low CR for no pinging

mopar used 360 heads on a stock 4-v 318 for yrs anyways

my 88-360 headed 318 4-v cop engine was a roller cam block with a flat tappet cam,I swaped in a voodoo roller cam and stock roller lifters and push rods

woke it right up and is pushing almost 300,000 miles and the heads have never been off it yet

it is starting to have a slight amount of blow by now though

but runs very strong and has good MPGs still

gets out of it own way now too

so any of the sb heads are ok for you to swap on and go

you could have some 360 heads milled to raise the CR back up some also

I have come across JY engines that have had a 360 head on one side and an open chamber 318 head on the other...never could tell by driving it..but it was a very worn engine and was a pig anyways
