Finally a HUSKER again

So this customer of mine just got done building him a 406 chevy, and Its in the car, but he wants to pre lube it and dosnt have the tool to do that so he is gonna use the starter to spinn over the engine. No biggie, but here is the kicker. His headers are on, and a royal pain in the butt to remove plugs, so he is gonna leave them in there, no biggie again, then he tells me the rocker arms arent in the engine yet, as they arent shipped from his vender yet. SOOOO, he asked me if it will hurt the thing to spinn it over without rockers in it, and not pull the plugs. 11 to 1 motor, and a flat cam. I told him to be carefull not to pop any lifters out, and pull push rods, but I couldnt answer him on the engine being hurt rolling over without valves opening or closing. He is conserned about bending a rod from the compression not going anywhere. Will it vacume lock the engine?
I told him to wait till his rockers show up. But its kinda interesting to me.

I would not! prime my motor with the starter, sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, It's Chevy so who cares.
Yes I live in Michigan, so there is still 1 light on

Just tell him to find a junk distributor. Remove the gear off of the shaft and cut the advance mechanism off the top and attach a drill and use it. Pretty simple deal, or buy the priming tool from Summit, but has to be easy to find a SBC dist to cut up. I have had one like that for years for the Chebbie stuff I do.

No fear. With the plugs in and no rockers the starter is going to burn up before it cranks over!
No matter what it should not be primed by cranking it over or without the pushrods and rockers on. On GM the oil for the rockers comes from the lifters/pushrods. get a primer or like someone posted, get a old distributer and make one.

Valves closed: intake stroke makes high vacuum, compression stroke restores this to slightly above atmospheric pressure. TDC: 0 BDC: -14.7 psi vacuum TDC: +1 psi pressure The air in the cylinder is just a spring, and does nothing. Even if it had full compression, how could 200 psi (or less) be more than the 1,000 or more from combustion?
Nothing will be hurt, since the cam lobe is the sensitive part. However: if you a tappet escapes, guess where the oil pressure goes?
