Any advice on the best way to remove the inner seal for the axle shafts on a 8 3/4?

Thanks!

You can buy a seal removal tool from harbor freight or make a slide hammer with a length of all thread-washers-nuts and a short piece of pipe, inside dia. slightly larger than all thread dia. and just keep going around the seal until you are really sick of it. Not very sophisticated (???) but in a pinch it has worked for me more than a few times.

Why mess with or have the expence of a special tool when you have teh perfect tool in your hand when you remove the axle. As you are sliding the axle out of the housing hold the flange to the rear of the car letting the flanged end slide on the front of the housing. When you feel the axle hit the seal pry rearward and you will have the seal out in a jiffy. It may take a couple of try s to get it but it works and works very well. Make sure to clean inspect and repack the bearings with a good wheel bearing grease. Use a grease gun with a needle attachment to get the grease into the rollers. Remember this is the only lubrication that they get. They are not lubricated from the rear axle lub.

if the backing plate is off the axle works excellent. Backing plates on I just bend a piece of rod with a 90 bend at the end & slide hammer it out.

I Have never had a problem even with the backing plates and shoes in place. Works just fine. Gotta do what works for you. I just don't like spending $$ o wasting time making something that will work when I don't need to. Especially for something that you don't use that often or there is an easier cheaper alternative that is always there when you need it.

I tried using the axle and it hits the housing edge before it prys out the metal around the seal. The slide hammer doesn't seem to be making any progress. Maybe I need a bigger slide. It's from a dent puller.

I usually use a 3' pry bar, or a big slide hammer (Morgan-Knocker) with a flat, 90 degree hook.

I have had good success just using the end of the axle to pop it out.

As soon as you feel it hit the seal pry back against the housing edge using the housing as a felcrum to pry against. Have to catch the seal as soon as you feel it. Done a good many of them over the years.
