The speedo needle is jumping alot at slower speeds.I am taking the inner cable out of the speedo cable housing and clean it.What kind of grease should I apply to the inner cable Hope this works,if not then a new cable might be needed.Thanx.....

The needle in my Scamp jumps around like crazy, it got worse over the years. In my case it's some plastic cam thingy in the speedometer itself that went bad, at least thats what Auto Instruments told me... they said it was very common.

Then one day I was driving along and it sounded like an alarm clock bell was going off and the needle was pegged at 120! Scared the pants off me

Back in the day I worked at a Chrysler dealership and we had quite a few cars with this problem. We were told to remove the cable from the sleeve and grind a little off both the square ends as this caused binding which made the needle jump. Take it for what it's worth, won't hurt to try.

The cables are greased.
if it dries up or breaks down the cable will bind and the speedo will jump..
Just don't remember what kind of grease should be used for the cable inside the case.

Slipkote makes a grease for speedometers also check this article.
Q) My speedometer makes a whirring noise, is it ready to wear out?
(A) Maybe yes, maybe no. That "whirring" sound is usually caused by a dry cable. You can detach the cable casing at the transmission end and carefully pull the cable through. Clean it with solvent and let it thoroughly dry then grease the length of the cable with a non-migrating grease, preferrably lithium-based. Then feed the cable back through. DON'T FORCE IT! The last inch or so you will have to turn the cable a little so that it will line up with the speedometer. Reconnect everything and test drive it. If that didn't cure your problem then the speedometer head likely needs service.

My 71 RR did that and I just shot WD-40 into the back of the guage where the cable goes in and it fixed it perfectly.
