You might want to check it when its hot too. Throw it in the oven for awhile at 150 degrees and then check it. I had a coil that checked fine when it was cold but was shorting internally when it got hot!

I have a coil that checks .80 primary, 13,500 secondary. Will a secondary reading over 11,000 trend to burnt out ballasts and ECUs? I went thru 4 ballasts and 2 ECUs within 4 months until I changed this coil out. I now have a MP chrome ECU, Accel 8145 coil and a 1.2ohm balast, 4 years with no failures.

Also ohm out coil tower to case, + to case, and - to case. Any reading other than zero = junk, windings are shorted to the case.

FYI, ohm values spec'd in 69/70 FSM are as follows at 70-80 degrees F:

2444241
Primary 1.41-1.55 ohms
Secondary 9200-10700 ohms

2444242
Primary 1.65-1.79 ohms
Secondary 9400-11700 ohms

When I was fooling around checking out the stock Magnum V8 ignition coil,
and the after-market alternatives,
I found in my junk pile a small 'wall wart' transformer
that put out 5 volts AC,
cut off the cord plug,
and connected the wire ends to the low side terminals of the coil,
then measured the AC output voltage of high side of the coil by measuring with an AC voltmeter from the center high voltage connector to ground.

This allows you to measure the 'turns ratio' of the internal wiring of the ignition coil.

The turns ratios of stock ignition coils usually lie in the 60 to 100 range.

The turns ratio can also be used to find the 'inductance' of the coil.

This online web app from the 'MegaSquirt Guys' allows simulating how a ignition system 'might' perform if you know some of these measurements:
