What are the best clutches to use for a 727 and why? Is it blue raybestos or the alto red eagle clutches or something else?

I think the alto red eagle clutches are the most commonly used in HP builds, and they are less expensive that the Raybestos Blue Plate clutches.

I just Googled Raybestos, and it looks like they have a new "Stage-1" Red performance clutch, but a search does not come up with anyone listing these or what they cost?

in my opinion the Blues are a big waste of money the reds hold up well buty for most applications the reagular tan Raybestos will do just fine.

For what it's worth, I have a buddy that worked at borg warner who used to do clutch durability testing. Now he admits that it was a small sample size, but the Alto Reds were by far the worst clutch he'd ever tested...

I know lots of guys use them, but I kind of wonder if all of the clutches aren't over kill?

We always used just the regular "tan" clutches in our 10 second Nostalgia Super Stocker... NEVER had a problem.

I just put them in the trans for my turbo small block... don't get too caught up in the hype.

Raybestos Hi Energy , over 100k miles with a big overlap on the 2-3 and they still hold fine, the bad is they may no longer be available.

I like the green metallic Raybestos waffle. Don't know if they are still available. A BUNCH of years ago I bought about 1000 or so ...still have maybe 200 left.

I've abused the heck out of Raybestos tan's on a street strip car with big smokey burnouts, long trips and you name it and the car did it.

I pulled it apart to inspect it after a friend bought the car and was installing a Hemi.

You could still read Raybestos and the dated stamping on all the clutches!

After about 6 years of racing on the van (low 14's to high 13's) when my reverse went out (drum and band!) I rebuilt my trans with alto red clutches and koleen steels. The Tan clutches that I pulled out though looked primo! *shrugs* Replaced them anyway, but figure they were holding up fine in part thanks to the transgo TF2 shift kit I had in there. Now about 3 years racing with nitrous in the low 12's on the red clutches and no worries or slippage noticed. She "bangs" into 3rd most of the time under light throttle presure. Hope that helps! Good luck!

I have worked for a Dodge dealer the last 24 years and since I get the factory kits cheap thats all I use is the stock factory clutches. They are in my sons 727 and in my 63's 727. My brother also uses stock clutches in his cars. They have held up great in our 11 second cars and also in my brothers 9 second Cuda. In fact we have never had one fail. I figured since I build my own tranny's if they did I fail I would change them but as I said they hold up fine in our cars. Ron
