2 days before leaving for the Mopar Nationals I had to install a new camshaft in my 72 Roadrunner with a 68 350 HP 440, 4 lobes were bad. In a mad scramble to get the car to the Nationals I could only find 1 camshaft in the Kansas City area. I bought a Comp Cams 454 lift with 218 duration and comp cams lifters. I wanted to stay as close to a factory magnum engine as I could. The set up worked good, great idle good vaccum. My only concern is when I reached 50 mph I could hear a lifter tick. When I got it home I pulled the intake and the cam looks good no problems. Every rocker has oil. My question is, do the stock valve springs need replaced and if so how much spring do I need with this cam. Thanks

I'd think that if the valve springs were newer they'd be fine however if the were old a whooped they should be replace. That cam isn't much bigger thna a stock magnum cam. You could also have a worn out rocker. CCan you pin point it to one cylinder?

No I can't pin point it. The rockers, shafts and pushrods are new. The valve springs are stock from 1968

1st thing did you pull oil pan in car and flush out block with intake cover off to get the 1/2 pound of metal fling around out. you could have metal chips in your new lifters. i smoked one solid cam in a stroker hemi, junk lifter/oil had to pull motor and rebuild and rehone block, only two lobes burned off

should have flushed it,but in a mad dash..

could be crap in a new lifter

could be a worn cam lobe and lifter from metal shavings

could be on the way to anothe cam wipe out

could just be an exhast leak you hear at speed

could be your a nervos nelly

could be your correct

could be the oil wiping the lobes

if this is x2 its a 50/50 chance at this time in the game..could drive it for yrs with a tick or be broke down and doing a rebuild in a couple days

not what you want to hear for sure...but IIRC,I mentioned that before you swaped cams in a mad rush

got spare moder?

Depending on what line of Comp cam it is and how severe the ticking is, some of the cames (especially the XE line) are not the quietest. My XE268 is relatively quiet at idle, but at 2000-2700 rpm, there is a noticable clicking. This is mainly due to the fast ramp rate of the XE cams. I have 20000 miles since I rebuilt the motor and all seems fine, except for one partially collapsed Comp lifter at about 6000 miles.
