If you are standing in a junkyard with no build tags, etc, how do you know if a 60's Mopar had tinted glass or not? Do any of the printed codes on the glass itself designate that?

What was the rule for tinted glass? Did all AC cars have it?

I have a Fury, an AC car, which appears to have tinted vent windows and door glass but not tinted quarter windows. No reason to think the quarter windows were ever changed.

Was the rear windshield tinted as well?

A/C cars were equipped with tinted glass. All tempered glass was tinted, while the WS had a shade band across the top...........

Tint was recommended with AC, but not required.

It may depend some on the year, but I know this to be true for 1970.

If you want to dig into it more the HH library is there for your use;

My experience with B and E bodies has been 3 options:

Clear Glass
Tinted Windshield
Tinted Glass

AC Cars = Tinted Glass

I restored a 1971 Cuda which was coded with both H51 and G21.
Which decodes as:
H51 Air Conditioning w/ft heater
G21 Clear Glass with A/C

This is according to GG little white book.
From this I ASSumed that A/C came standard with tinted glass but if you wanted to delete it you would need to choose G21

Basically you are correct.

This is straight from the 71 Barracuda coding guide:

G11 Tinted glass-all windows. Remarks: Recommended with AC

G15 Tinted windshield. no remarks

G21 Clear glass-all windows. Remarks: To be used only when tinted glass is not desired with AC.

All of the Barracuda models show the three codes above with an "E" in the columns, which means "extra".

Sounds like if you ordered AC, and didn't want tint, but forgot to check the G21 code, they put G11 full tint on the car, and also charged you for it. It wasn't included in the AC price. I have an original 73 Challenger window sticker, and both items have a separate charge.

I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the sales bank and dealer ordered cars had tint with AC. The AC cars with no tint were probably customer ordered sold cars, and the buyer was trying to save a few bucks.

I can't speak for all body styles but the 71-74 B's the side glass will have either TINT or TNT with the logo and build date.

Thanks guys, I'll have to check the build tags.

I have two 66 Fury VIP's....both are factory AC cars. One has tinted windshield but clear windows. The other has full tint.

What about the rear windshield? Are they the same as the sides or??

Another question...I plan to have the windows tinted anyway by some local shop. Is it better to start with factory tinted windows or clear?

The rear window was always tinted with the full tint code, and clear with the tinted windshield or clear glass codes.

As for your last question, my preference would be to use original tinted glass if you can find it. The aftermarket tint will be a film, and even the lightest shade of tint will still be darker than the factory tinted glass. Also, you can wind up scratching the film.

I have the broadcast sheet for the '66 Fury that has tinted side glass. There is a '1' in the box for "tinted or clear glass". Does that mean anything?

My 68 383 dart GTS has no A/C but has a tinted windshield only. It's on the fender tag as X2. It makes it a pretty rare option since tinted windshields usually came on A/C cars.

The Fury I mentioned above has no tinted side windows but tinted windshield, too.

I gotta tell ya, any 68 383 GTS is a pretty rare car!
