I got a 99 Cherokee 4-DR with 192,000 miles. I took it to a shop because the back window on the passenger side went down but wouldn't go back up with either the master switch or door switch. So the mechanic was able to jump it up using a wire and said I needed a new switch. I just put in a new switch and nothing happened at all. Actually I checked the other side and when I pressed the switch on that window too, nothing would happen. The same on the passenger side front window, nothing would happen. However, if I used the master switch at the driver's side I could move all windows up and down except the passenger side rear, but I don't know if it's because I left the switch out and unplugged. What could be wrong here? Nothing has been changed the other door panels have never even been off. It couldn't be the motors if they all still operate off the switch.

Carefully inspect the wires in the door jumper of the driver door .

You more than likely have a broken wire inside the rubber boot in the door jam. Try opening the door slowly while operating the switch sometimes the wire will make contact and the window will work.

I usually grab the boot and lift and twist it some.If the wires broke they usually make contact. That or split the boot and have a look.I usually find more than 1 wire broken or almost broken.Rocky

You can also flood the switch with contact cleaner (radio shack).
Since the window motors are reversible, if they work one way but not the other it's usually a gummed up/worn switch, not a broken wire which would kill both directions....

I checked it out again today. It appeared to be a gummed up lock-out switch. I cleaned it and turned it off and was able to operate all windows using there own switch and then I turned on the lock-out switch and it disabled the use of the window switches just like it should. However, the initial problem I'm trying to figure out still exsists. The passenger rear window doesn't go up or down with it's own switch or the master switch. This is one that one day got stuck in the down position and I took it to a shop and he jumped it to get it up and told me I needed a new switch. I've got a new switch in and it doesn't work. So actually all the windows work except the passenger side rear. How do I determine if it's a bad motor or bad switch? It never got weak or weak sounding.

You are going to have to pull the panel, so do that and jumper the motor to test. If the tech was able to do this, suspect wiring/switch.
Then put a test light across the terminals to the motor (not the motor terminals, the harness. It should light when the switch is activated.
After that, you really need a wiring diagram to figure out power and ground circuits, switch routing and feed circuits. Good Luck!

The wiring for rears is pretty simple.Disconnect the motor wires.Put a test light in the 2 terminals. It should light in both positions. Its just a reversing ground. One way switch powers one and grounds one.The other way polarity is reversed. Both switchs should do the same.If it dosent Id suspect a bad master switch or broken wire in the drivers door. The rear doors usually dont open as much ad drivers door.Rocky

I didn't find any broken wires anywhere on the driver's door or the rear passenger door. But the rear passenger door window went down with the master switch but not with it's own switch and wouldn't go back up either way. I had to jump the motor to get it up. Earlier in the day I had it where I could control all the windows with their own switches but now I can't control them with the master switch or their single switches. Also the power door locks don't appear to be working either. Before I pay the money for the master switch could it be the circuit breaker? It controls the power windows and power locks.

Take the drivers door panel off and disconnect the white connector at the inside front of the door and give a tug on every wire that goes throught the rubber boot. Just to be sure.

Might help, also check the wires running up through to the drivers door.

I couldn't find any broken wires in the driver's door tube. I just ordered a used master power window switch. So it should be here within the week and I'll try it out.
