Only with warm engine?
Do you have hydaulical valve lifters?
Give it a try and reinsert the old spark-plugs.
After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

Screw each idle mixture screw in until it seats LIGHTLY (count # of turns), take them out, then shoot a 3 second blast of starting fluid into each of the 2 idle mix holes. Reinstall screws (dont swith them from side to side), the right # of turns & try it. Still stalling, turn each mix screw out richer (CCW) 1 turn which is alot to see if that circuit is the culprit. I'm assuming your idle speed is in the ballpark

I just tried pulling and cleaning the idle screws. No change to it running. Also the vacuum at idle is 10-14 in. and doesn't seem to be affected by the idle screws. Also can I use holley jets on the barry grant?

Yes you can use holley jets in a barry grant along with gaskets, power valves etc....

if the idle speed is to low it would stall, but at 1000 rpm idle, I don't know that this is your trouble. If the float level is too high, you may be flooding when the fuel sloshes forward. I read recently that E-10 gas requires a slightly lower float level (I suppose because the ethanol expands easier than straight gas?)

Have you taken the carb apart including metering blocks and checked it over? Demons are known for QC issues,
....as well as the Edelbrocks and Holley Street Avenger carbs,.....Demons/Holleys seem to suffer from casting/machining debri right out of the box use, or after a few hours run time,...I've come across more than several on customers cars with brand new carbs,....the lack of responce from the idle screws, either one side or both,...disasemble and blow the metering block out with 100+ psi compressed air,...the amount of junk debri and casting crap is amazing!.....the Edelbrocks are best thrown in the trash
