Should the rear bearing in back of the alternator be magnetic if the charging system is working properly? The amp gauge is reading about + 20, but my volt meter is showing about 13.o while the engine is running.I think I still have a problem?any suggestions?

The MOPAR regulator adjusts voltage based on temperature. Higher temp makes the voltage lower to protect the battery from overcharging and over heating. At summer operating temps, voltage will drop to 13.0 or even a bit lower.

If its charging and you have 13 volts you are good to go.

(1) yes, a good backyard test. (2) 13.0 at the batt or the alt?

Something is amiss. If it's showing a 20A charge on the ammeter it'd for sure be magnetized & I'm pretty sure be over 13V at the alt and at the batt even w the voltage drop. I'm out of ideas (for the moment!)

I have had an electrical problem in the past, had to replace under dash harness, engine comp.harness, coil, ecu box, dist p.u.coil,dash circut board, voltage limiter, due to a short in the harness.Im" thinking there still may be a problem, possible with the ignition wire (alt. rebuild guy mentioned it) ,the blue one? I don"t know where it is or how to check it? About a year ago I fixed everything I mentioned and now Ihad to have the alt. rebuilt again.Iam afraid that I am going to have problems with the alt.if I don"t get this problem fixed.Any suggestions would be appreciated? Thanks Aian

the more I read about amm readings problems the more I can see is ppl doesn't understand the system or the gage reading.

you could be got some problem.. OR NOT.

1st.... do you have any relay, upgrade or accesory hooked on batt side ?

2nd... are you sure batt is REALLY full ?

3rd... whats the alternator do you have ? stock one ? so maybe 40 to 50 amps output. Those alts takes FOREVER to charge back a batt.

4th... how much time have you been getting the ammeter reading at 20 amps.

I've attached the voltage vs temp chart from a 1970 FSM. Voltage is measured at the ignition side of the ballest resistor. This is for the dual field "flat pack" voltage regulator. Re-pops are made to the same or similar specs.

Is the charging system working normaly except you are worried about voltage? If its just the low voltage you are seeing, I don't think its a problem.
