As far as I know, any TRW piston part number (no matter how old), if it STARTS with an "L" that they are forged not cast.

From what I know the actual first digit in the part number has NOTHING to do with forged or cast. Someone told me that if it's a "2" it's forged, but if it's a "3" it's cast... I don't believe that's true?

Does anyone know for sure? I'm trying to ID a set of pistons but I can't guarantee they are what I need.

Is it easy to tell if an OLD TRW is a forged or cast piston?

I know a L2316F is a forged 10.5 340 replacement piston...

is the F for Forged?

to recognize a forged piston just look in the back, if the aluminum is smooth it's forged. If it has graph it's cast

I kind of figured that I could tell by the grained look of cast, vs. the smooth look of forged...

From what I know "F" on the end of the part number means its a floating piston, and a "P" means press fit...

And that's the problem. Every forged piston I can find has both an "L" and a "2"

I've yet to see a "L" and a "3" except for this set...

I remember being told "that all TRW Part Numbers Starting with "H" are Hypereutectic pistons and Part Numbers Starting with "L" are Forged"...

Doug,
In 17 years in the engine business, I have never seen a TRW piston that starts with an L be anything but forged. Actually, I have not seen any cast TRW pistons. The only pistons that I know that starts with a L and are cast are EGGE Machine pistons. We use those in our old resto type engine builds. Don't have any info on that number, though.

Take care,

Part numbers in the below charts with a H as the first digit are hypereutectic pistons, if the first digit is a L they are are forged pistons. Under Pin Type, P indicates the piston will work with a press pin type connecting rod, F means the piston will work with a floating pin connecting rod. If you see P or F it means the piston can be used with either type of connecting rod. FT under the top shape column means Flat Top piston, if it also has valve reliefs the number of reliefs will be listed also
