I have two of these blocks('72 and '73) and was wondering which main bearings everyone is using? the only ones i can find are 1/2 groove. i was hoping to use full groove.did a search and found where some folks said that you could use '74 and up bearings.has anyone done this? this is going to be for a 408 so i want to use the best available bearings.

thanks,

Andy

Im sure the experts will chime in but my understanding is the 74 up block uses a different thrust bearing. Never did a personal comparison though. Also, Clevite has bearings listed for the different blocks. Thinking this may be the reason.

I am running the 120M that are 3/4 grove. They are for the 71-73 blocks.

You can try Calico coatings. They sell coated bearings for all types of apps. They may have a full grooved set for the 71".

I honestly dont think there would be any issue, I have used a bearing set out of a magnum engine in a 75 360. Its just a beater truck, and I used what I had laying around. Its still running fine with o oiling issues.

Can't remember the part# but I just used two set's of mains to get the full grove set-up that I wanted, I have a 72 block and from what have heard the machining in the earlier block,s were supposed to be a smaller relief cut for the outer flange diameter of the thrust bearing and the later block's were machined bigger for a bigger bearing outer flange diameter, but some of the earlier block,s were machined for the bigger diameter,,,if I was told correctly.

yeah i thought about buying two sets but that would be over $100 easy. also thought about going ahead and getting the '74 and up full grooves, but if they didn't work then i would have to get two sets of the early bearings and be out that much more money!!! i was hoping that one of the smallblock experts would chime in and tell what they do on the early blocks.i may have to call ryanj and ask him. i sent him an email but haven't gotten a response yet.i'm sure he is real busy,so i thought i would ask here. i just need a deffinate answer (yes or no) about using the '74 and up bearings.

I am not have any problems running 1/2 groove bearings I spin it 7200 just looked at all the bearings after 100 passes and they all still looked like new.

oh my machinist also showed me an artical from Clevite showing that a full groove bearing could not carry the same load as a half groove

that's absolutely true. however, i believe the benfits of having full time oiling to the connecting rods far outweighs the small amount of load bearing capacity you give up.

I personally use MS1266P 74 to 80 main bearings full grove with wide thrust on my 71 360 block. If you use these bearings you may have to chamfer the thrust bearing a little bit on the back side because the block could use a little more relief in this area, but to chamfer the bearing a little is no big deal, I've been running mine that way for years
