Hey gang..
Can anyone pinpoint the application for this Federal? I know that's a big block/hemi attach bracket, that's a proper cooler for a Saginaw but what's throwing me off is the later model pulley on it. Would this be for a '67 or'68 440 4speed B-body?

Look for the date on the pulley

I'm going to guess 440 police car.

Thanks Scott... Now, I'd like to beg the question, what does the Federal Power steering pump look like for a '67/'68 440 4-speed B-body then?

The Federal pump you have looks about correct for any Federal application. There may be some small changes over the years, basically it's the same pump. T/A AAR quick ratio is supposed to have a "special" Federal pump.

The bracket you have is big-block c-body & HEMI - AFAIK

I am unsure if the cooler was used on any '69 Federal applications. There is some debate over its use on Daytonas and/or HEMI cars. The inlet & outlet appear to be clocked in a different direction compared to any I've seen. The cooler bracket is for the Federal pump, are you saying the cooler itself is Saginaw?

What are the dates on your cooler bracket?

Yes the fittings seem to go in different directions than all the others posted and my 71 340 pump. also i thought i read that they changed to a solid federal pump pulley about late 70 to early 71 but not sure.

cooler date should give some indication of its application. There are 3 series of four digit numbers on the coolers. 0210, 21st day of 70 is the date on this one.
I'm not aware of the use of this cooler on 67-68 cars.

Looks to me like possibly someone removed the TA/AAR, 340 bracket and replaced it with this for Hemi only use bracket.

That's what I'm starting to think as well. I'm not sure the '66'-68 440/426 4speeds got the cooler on the Federal. I know they got the Federal, but haven't seen any with the cooler. With that being said, maybe the pump would be of use to a fella/gal restoring a TA and/or AAR. So, did the TA/s and AAR's all come with 3.55 and higher? If not, those equipped with the 3.55 come with the Federal with the cooler and the spoked pulley? I tried to search for engine compartment pictures of TA's and AAR's yesterday, but didn't get anywhere...

Yes, "standard" ratio on AAR/TA was 3.55 with only option being 3.91, so all with PS should have gotten the cooler.

Cool.. Do you know if they had solid or spoked pullies? Also, seeing your userid is a 68 Hemi, do you know if the hemi 4-speeds in '68 and earlier had the cooler with the Federal?

Well, as some have mentioned along with Scott, looks like my application is for a small block '71-later & AAR/TA. Seems someone put a bigblock/hemi bracket on it.. Soooooooooo, looks like I'll be searching for a "Troy trade" for a Saginaw with a cooler in good working order. This will help someone restoring a TA/AAR.. Thanks to Barry for the pic from the Challenger/Cuda board..

My AAR has a spoked pulley.
My RR is a 4 speed with the Federal pump and does not have a cooler. Actually, I don't believe anything in '68 had coolers. I don't remember ever seeing one on anything.

Thanks... It reaffirms my thoughts... '69 was pretty much the first year for the coolers on the pump... Thanks

Well,..Troy, if you find a Saginaw pump, I have a very nice original Saginaw cooler (date code 3399)painted ready to go, straight fins, really nice,....been stored for years, was used to base my repro coolers off of,...

A Troy trade could be the cooler for a set of 70 only E body racing mirrors chrome or painted, or a 70 only Cuda rimblow fishcap center,....used/repro

let me know?

Mike
