I was wondering how close is to close for carb to hood clearance. I have a 1" spacer under my carb and it brings the carb real close to the hood scoop (6 pak type scoop). I was also wondering about the opening size in the scoop for a 417" engine spinning 8200 RPM. So the requirement of the engine is about 500 cu. ft./min of air. Does anyone think the close nature of the carb (1050 dominator) to the hood (about 1 1/2") is a problem? I have been considering going to a different hood scoop to give me more clearance to the carb.

From testing both Chrysler and myself, the top of the
carb should be 3/4" below the bottom of the scoop for
best performance... if the carb is up in the air flow
its causing turbulence plus if its way up in the air
flow its making the air go into shear to get into the
carb .... if you want to do a cheapo wind tunnel test
tape 2"-3" long pieces of yarn to all different places
in the scoop and mount a camera to the hood so you
can record the action of the stings

OR...Mount the camera onto your brothers car facing rearward when you run him heads-up. Sorry, I saw it and I took the shot. J/K, I joke. I'm big on the string trick for scoop placement. Mike added valid criteria...below bottom of scoop base.

Every time this comes up all I can say is look at the hemi super stockers...............the air horns are damn near touching the scoops and they run pretty good.

Mr P, I'm guessing you mean 3-4 inches and not 3/4"? Mine's barely at 3" and I've wondered if that's too close.

I've heard a minimum of 2" (I too have 1") and there is a theory based on throat size I think.

No... I said 3/4" below the BOTTOM of the scoop not
the top... by rights they say 3/4" below the bottom
of the intake of the scoop

Thumper they have rules to follow... look at pro stocks
they dont put those scoops on just for kicks... you
know are the PS guys are about aerodynamics

Agree about the pro-stocks but the super-stockers are difinately making it work.

Well, OK then.

I have this old test done by Direct Connection for the snorkle scoops showing desired placement. they had found the previous style didn't work very well and came up with this design.this is the older scoop and lack of anything protruding out from the opening showed very little airflow into it.It might sound weird but I am using this on my Cuda.

i think the real point is this! sometimes you just got to do what you just got to do. like when the motor is set back and up high due to the car being low to ground.

I will provide more detail. My carb sits pretty high, probably about 1" higher than the bottom of the scoop opening. I have the short 6-pak style AAR hood and my carb is sealed very well to the hood.

I have wondered if my scoop is arrowdynamically below the flow of air.

My carb is on a 1" HVH spacer that I could remove and try a couple of passes without it?

At this point, I just want it to run appropriate times for what it is. Not to concerned if I need another style of scoop, but don't want to do it if there is no gain there.

I think Lonnie will be looking at tail lights even if he is quicker than me

Actually, our cars are very well matched as they sit. I am looking to throw another .1 to .2 in the bank though.

I've been wondering this too since the carb on my roadster is only about 1/2" from the hood without a hood scoop.

I am looking for one of those windshield snorkle scoops for my Colt. Anyone?
