Have any of you switched cams in a 69 Dart with the motor in the car? I'll remove the radiator and fan and the grille, it looks like I'll probably have to remove the front bumper also. I'm wondering if any factory sheetmetal stuff will be in the way. I'm not worried about degree'ing the cam in, I can do that with the heads on and go off the valve spring retainer, I've done it that way and double checked it the next time I had the heads off.
I'm just thinking ahead here, if I get the money together I'd like to have a custom cam before the end of summer. I'm gonna go with a custom Comp cam only because I can get a discount on Comp.

Sledge, too much overlap, no compression.
Overlap doesn't hurt compression; it's the closing point of the intake valve that determines the cranking pressure. Big duration generally = late closing point = lower cranking pressure.
Too much overlap just makes the idle rougher and delays the point at which the engine "cleans up" when the RPM rises.

The cam is a CamMotion roller: 281/283 at .050, 706/661 lift with 1.5 rockers, ground on a 104. We've discussed it here several times and everyone seems to agree it bleeds off alot of compression and isn't at all the 'right' cam for a 500" low deck with 440-1 ported heads, only 11.9 compression, and only shifting at 6600. The cam works GREAT on 93 octane fuel, and I've ran even less octane on the street. So if you're looking for a street roller............. It seems like most here want me to be around 272/282 at .050, ground on a 110, and whatever lift maybe 700'ish. I'll call Comp next week to get their grind recommendation.

It could probably be done with the grille still attached But I think the latch tray would need to be removed at minimum.
Anyway I pulled the cam out of my 383 in my 69 dart , didn't have to pull the bumper but I did pull the rad , grille and latch tray .

Hey Bob - Your times look pretty good and so does the 60ft...and runs on pump gas. How much are you hoping to gain from the swap, or are you just looking for better idle quality?

Didn't do anything special. The latch support had to be removed.
