When i bought my enclosed race trailer this year it had a Onan Generator 4000 Genseet Emerald Plus in it which the previous owner hooked up.
When i went to use the winch it drained the battery. I found out quickly that when the generator is running it is NOT charging the battery.
There is a plug with a bunch of cut off wires running off the generator.
Anyone know how i can get it to charge the battery?
LOL.... same identical unit I have... I have a plug going to my trailer(gen is mounted in the bed of the truck)... and I have a battery charger plugged in for the gen battery... works great..... Oh by the way there is NO charging circuit on that gen... dont ya just love it.... that gen was for a motor home and it used the motor home batteries

I am not that familiar with small onan gas units but the diesel marine units have a dc winding on the main shaft next to the fan , Check the control box cover for a diagram, If it has the winding just run the wires from the box to the batts
It doesnt have a charging circuit... I even bought the book on it to see what was wrong with it... still didnt believe the book(who could build a gen without a charging circuit) so I even called the dealer... nope, no charging circuit

hey wait a minute, how do they run the spark and fuel pump with out supplying a charging source
Its drawing on the batt... my fuel tank is a 35 gal aux tank under the truck so I have a small pump to move the fuel up to the carb and its drawing on the batt all the time when the gen is running... thats the reason I have a battery charger hooked to the batt maybe thats why they offered a separate charging unit

Where I plug into the trailer(underneath the trailer) is a plug box so its either plugged into the gen OR plugged into the shop... I cant do both... only 1 plug EDIT or I can plug in at the track if they have power
The problem is you half to isolate the nutrals via dis connect or tranfer switch while pluged into city power or you back fead the gen. through the nutrals, and the city power company always wins!!!

The gen CANT be plugged in if I'm on HOUSE power 2 separate wire hook ups(I have to unplug the gen if I want to use the house power)... basically I have a extension core going to the one and only inlet from the gen to the trailer(its underneath) so its a either or, not both

Same here and keeps all the house batteries charged while hooked up to the house power, also have a sewer dump / wash-down at the same location
