Working on my neighbors rod and trying to wire the turn signals and brake lights. All switches are under the dash, horn lights and ignition. So I am having a devil of a time trying not to have front brake lights with the rears, I am decent with wiring and I am trying to use relays also. I really need some help here hopefully someone can can show or tell me how. Thank you in advance.

Dan

I always use the aftermarket turnsignal switch in my rods.$35.00 and everything works as it should when done.

You have front brake lights, right?
There should be 4 wires coming out of the TS switch. LF, RF, LR and RR. This is how the fronts get a TS and the rears get a TS and a brake.

I assume you are using a stock style tilt column, something like 70's-80's mopar or GM???

basically here is what most columns have, there is a ING switch set up and then a 7-8 wire plug for the turn/brake lights(horn to)

so you will have 3 feeds in to that plug(usually pink, red and white)

1 comes in fron your stop light switch(white wire)
1 comes in from the turn signal flasher
1 comes in from the 4 way flasher

then you have 4 coming out
1 right front turn
1 left front turn
1 right rear turn and stop
1 left rear turn and stop

you need to hook up the turn indicators on the dash to the RF and LF wires or when you hit the brakes the dash light will come on(been there done that)

Oh and the last wire in that plug should be to the horn relay(you also might have a light wire for the key area)
depends on what column you have.

it sounds like the rear and front wires are hooked up together and are feeding the front turn lights with the feed that should go to the rear only. hope this helps. Ron...

let us know how it works out...

Started with a harness with GM connectors, The colum has no wiring whatsoever. SO .... in typical street rod fashion I need to make this work. My turn signal switch is a dpdt center off switch(on off on) Brake light switch is pedal arm mounted as normal. But in wiring and making drawings I am always backfeeding the front turn signal bulbs with the brakes and turn signals on. I have tried relays and still have issues so I will check out the book and see, in the meantime I sure could use some help. All switches are under the dash for a cleaner better look, in essence this is a stock(free) harness with modifications.

in the feb. issue of rod&custom magazine, there is an article on how to make the turnsignals work with a toggle switch. american autowire was the outfit that made this kit. the article had a diagram that showed a gm turnsignal harness used, and the routing of those wires thru a relay and toggle switch. i think if a guy just thought thru the different color schematics of any column, you could easily do the same using your existing column. there is a slight mod to do to the existing wiring so the back feed problem is eliminated.

I am still confused, are you saying that the way you operate the turn signals is just with a 3 position toggle switch?

power in to the middle and out on the outside posts?

if that the case then you must have 2 feeds to the middle post(brake lite feed and turn signal flasher feed)
that would be why the front light work like brake lights

I would run a 2nd bulb in the tail light for brake lite only, but you would have to run a separate wire for brakes

power to the stop light switch and then back to the brake light bulb.

and then just run the feed from the turn flasher to the toggle switch and then off to the RR,LR,RF.LF bulbs Ron....

Wiring diagram with GM connector. This should help or make it worse.

so in the rear you have 1 bulb for each side,
and at some point you have 2 wires hooked together to one of the tail light wires(1 from the stop light switch and 1 from the toggle for turn,yes?)...

I don't know how you could wire it with just 1 bulb and "NOT" get feedback, that is why I suggest having a separate bulb in the tail light for the brake light.

then the 1 bulb will be for running lights and turn and the other bulb is only for brake

do you have room in the tail light to put a second bulb??? thats how I would do it, Ron....

Dante he does not have any wire in his column, he has a toggle switch for the turn signals,
but thanks for that diagram Ron...

Hey Ron, I would think it would be easier to change the socket to a two filament than add a separate bulb. What kind of vehicle is this? Somewhere in this thread I read he had a GM harness. The schematic would at least tell him what wires are what.

heres another idea, you could get one of these Trailer / Tail Light Converters.(check your local trailer place).
just run your brake wire and turn wires to it and then run the brake/turn wires from it to the rear. Ron..

Thank you allfor your help. It would have been nice to see that article before the harness was modified and the connectors "round filed". T he bulbs, front and rear have 2 filiments in each 1 for parking lights and the other for turn signals and brake lights. I have ordered the streetrod wiring book, hope it will be helpful.
