I tool a long 1/4 bolt (4") Cut the head of and ground it to a point and bent it 90 deg and another 90 so it came out by the balancer then used a piston stop to get it dialed in.

Way better than the 20 to 30 deg swing you get when you move your head one way or the other,

Put a bend in the pointer and get the point closser to the damper. Paint it white for visability and adust it at known TDC.
