I have an Accel performance replacement distributor with a mallory mechanical advance. It has the two torx screws to adjust the amount of mechanical advance. I bought a t15 screwdriver from Sears and tried to carefully loosen the screws. One came out okay, but the second one stripped. I tried every screw extractor from OSH till the head finally broke off. I removed the shaft and mechanical advance from the body and saw half the screw was sticking out the bottom. I cut a small slot in the bottom of the screw and tried turning it out with a flathead screwdriver. It didn't budge, even with PB blaster. So I ordered a new distributor and sent my old one to Accel for repair (will take about 5 weeks) to use as a spare. What is the trick to loosening the screws. Did I use the wrong size screwdriver (t15)? Is there loctite on the screw or maybe it was cross-threaded from the factory?

The mopar distributors use the same set up. The screws have some sort of lock to them (loctite, lock screws). Yes, make sure the screw driver is a relatively tight fit.

Thanks, I think the screws might be torx plus. I checked the fit with my t15 screwdriver and it is kinda sloppy so I didn't risk damaging my new distributor. I ordered a ip15 driver. Hopefully it will have a snugger fit.

I got the ip15 driver in. The screws are definitely torx plus. There is considerably less slop. They came out effortlessly with the correct driver.

What the heck is torx plus/ip?? Do I need to buy some new torx drivers for something I may encounter?

Torx plus is a new style of torx drive. It looks like a regular torx but the star has wider ends. I think the size numbers are the same. For example IP15 (Torx Plus) and T15 (Torx) are the same size but different profiles. Supposedly a torx driver will fit a torx plus bolt but shouldn't be used for high torque. It wouldn't be a bad idea to buy some torx plus drivers. I couldn't find any locally and had to order one from amazon. When in doubt put a regular torx driver in the bolt head and if it feels sloppy don't try removing it.
